| Greetings - I am new to the forum My wife and I purchased our first companion dog, Zelda five years ago. Zelda is a ten pound Silky and is a bundle of love and energy. We are hooked, big dogs are great too, and we have both (Had a full size Aussie, and have a 10 year old Sheltie). Just last week we rescued a Yorkie from a neighbor. They were giving her away because the grandson chased her around with a baseball bat. Not good, we had to get her out of there! I said rescued, because our little Yorkie, her name is now Pearl was a sick baby. She was a bag of bones, her teeth were bad, real bad and she had a uterine infection. The Vet said one more or two more days without treatment and she would have been beyond help. Pearl has been home about a week and each day, I presume as she feels better, a bit more of her personality surfaces. Our Vet is great gave us nearly half off of the cost for her spay and oral surgery. The original plan was to, do the right thing, get her to the Vet, check for a micro chip and lost/stolen listings, get her vaccinated and find her a better home, that home ended up ours she has fit right in with us and our dogs. The Vet says she’s between 8 and 12 years old, we picked 10. After her oral surgery she was left with only a half dozen teeth and has a significant under bite. She weighed an even 6 pounds when we took her to the Vet, you could feel every rib, backbone, hips, and shoulder blades. I am feeding here Hills Science Diet canned puppy food for the extra calories and would like to get her weight up to 6.5 to 7 lbs. Does that sound about right to those of you with aging Yorkie? |

| Congratulations and bless your kind hearts. I don't have a senior yorkie, but putting on a pound should make a big difference. I'm sure she is already enjoying life a whole lot more than she did before. Welcome to YT |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome and how wonderful to take her in and get her back to health. I recently took in an older male from a lady I met who recently had a stroke. She had gotten Nikki as a rescue 2 years ago with no history on him. When I met Nikki his breath was so bad you could smell it from a far. He had to have all his teeth pulled. He was always a bad eater but improved some after his teeth were removed. When I took him 2 months ago he was of course stressed from having to be rehomed and lost more weight. He was 4 lbs when the rescue got him and 6.3 when I brought him home. He then lost 13 ounces the first month I had him. He has gained some weight back but you can still feel all his bones. He is estimated at 13-15 years old so I think that may be why he feels so boney. Iam feeding him the only thing he will now eat which is Cesars, which is bad but I couldn't let him lose any more weight. Please keep us posted on how she is doing.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Welcome to YT! You've taken on quite a challenge, but it sounds like you are doing a great job. What her proper weight should be depends on her body structure/overall size. You & the vet will know when she has achieved that goal. 6.5-7 lbs is good for many, but some require more. Roxy is 8 lbs & not at all overweight. Some are larger. How nice your vet is helping you out so well. : ) Good luck!

| I can not say anything about the weight but it sounds as though with all the love and wonderful care you are giving her, she will blossom and settle into herself in no time. Congrats on your new (older) baby.

| Pearl Update Thanks for all the kind thoughts. Pearl had her vet check up last Wednesday. The vet said her recovery was remarkable. I'm sure her wagging tail, bright eys and alert ears helped in that perspective. But even so no heart murmur from the infection and she's put on about a quarter pound and is eating very good with her 6 teeth. Her stiches are out and she's current on her imunizations etc. I will figure out how to post post pictures next week, after a trip to the salon. |

| You're so wonderful for rescuing that little girl. What a sad life she must have had and I'm sure there are many more out there like her. I'm very glad that she is getting better and gaining some weight. You'll know when she's reached her optimum weight. You should barely be able to feel her ribs. I'm sure she believes she is in heaven right now after what she has probably lived through the last eight years. There is nothing quite so precious as an older yorkie. You'll find that out in time.

| Welcome! We're new too. You are wonderful for taking in Pearl and providing her with the last home she will ever have, and a great home from the sound of things. I love, love, love senior dogs, but not many people realize what gems they truly are, IMO. Kristan
