Thank you all for the warm, loving support... I appreciate it more than you know.....

Most people don't know the proper and legal steps to take or even that they have options or that Yes there are Legal steps that must be made. It's actually very simple , you run an add in the news paper in the lost/found section and there is no charge to the party running the found add. Also you contact your local shelter and report that you have the dog, this does not mean that you have to turn the dog over to the shelter but that you give them the description of the dog and your phone number for contact if the owner is looking for it. There is a legal time limit to hold the dog before you can keep it ir give it away because it is not yours yet to keep or give away till that time has been met. The time limit can very from state to state and normally your local shelter can tell you what the time limit is and if they can't then the local Police Dept can.
I very much understand what you are saying... This circumstance was a life and death situation for this dog. My neighbor found the dog in her sunroom, which has a doggie door for her other dogs that are outside dogs. She wasn't going to allow the dog in her house because she doesn't allow pets in her home. I felt so sorry for her that I couldn't allow her to be in that sunroom with the other dogs. Yorkies are not meant to be outdoor dogs and I didn't want her outside another night so I brought her into my home. I bathed, fed, put her in a nice clean warm kennel so she could be secure. I never intended on keeping her because I already have two dogs myself, a Yorkie and a Sheltie. I take serious care of my babies. They are like my own kids. I NEVER, EVER let my Yorkie out of my site, because I know how fast another dog could attack, or that she may wonder into the street or wonder off, so she is never left unattended. I know it could happen and happen fast and I've taught her to stay by my side. My husband and I treat her like a little baby and take all the precautions as if she was a child. That may be a little over protective, but that's how it is. What I'm getting at, is I have my hands full with the two that I have and I didn't need another one, but this starving, scared Yorkie I couldn't ignore, so I did what i thought best and brought her in my home. I did what any of you wouldn've done. Maybe it wasn't the right thing to do by giving her to someone else the next day, but I knew I had to go to work and leave her alone and i felt after meeting this lady she would be better for her than i could be and that she could be with her during the day when she needed to go potty and that she would see the Vet that day also. I didn't give her away without making sure we did everything possible in case she was lost from her owner. Honestly, deep down I felt she was abandoned or even possible abused and knew she needed the tender care of this older lady who had lost her dog 3 months ago. She knew how it felt to have a lost baby and i knew she would keep her word about taking her to the Vet and posting flyers. After listening to some people from YorkieTalk, I put ads in the local papers and posted on facebook that I had found this dog in case someone from here knew of anybody that had lost their baby. I checked craigslist, another local forum for any listings of lost yorkies. I have kept in touch with this lady every two or three days for updates on her condition, or to see if anyone had called for her yet. After all of this, I don't know what else to do. I know they mentioned that I hadn't called the local shelter or
Animal control, but if I had done that, she would've been put to sleep that day due to her being so starved. I know that for sure.
I've lived here my entire life in the same town and have a respected reputation. I work in the school system as a school nurse. I take care of sick children everyday and I love my job. Some people here on this forum have made me look like the bad person here for not doing things exactly the way they would've done it. I'm not an expert when it comes to taking care of sick dogs, but I promise you, I love them with all my heart and soul and NEVER would harm them in any way. I did what i thought was best and I have no regrets at all. I also don't know the legal aspects of this, but it wasn't about what was legal at the time,it was saving her life and that's what was more important to me...

So glad she is improving and I think this thread should stay open as most of us would like to know what happens to her and how her health improves.

I'm thankful to you for rescuing that little yorkie! You did what you felt was best for her and should be commended for that, rather than attacked with hateful and venomous statements. All you have to do is look around at other threads and you'll find the same thing happening to others, so please don't take it personal. It seems to be how they get their jollies. I'm so glad that yorkie is in good hands and getting the love she deserves.

We found Fizz running loose on a busy street. Spent the next few weeks looking for an owner...He had no collar and no chip. ( I had him checked for a chip by Our Animal resource Center, Our Humane Society, My Vet, And SICSA...just to be safe Had the Vet check him out and put him on antibiotics. $200.00 and the dog was not mine. Spent the next weeks looking at every lost dog thing there was on line, in pet stores, in the Vet clinincs...My vet even put out calls to the vet clinics in the area for me I really like my vet. Many calls later to the Animal resourse center and other rescue palces. No one even came forward. Called our county shelter and they have a three day turn around for dogs without tags ans microchip, then the dog is up for adoption. ....we waited three weeks...Finally decided it was time he knew he had a long term loving family whose other dog really likes him. So now I just want to treat him right in every way, he is now tagged and microchipped and loved a ton. If my situation had been like mommaofmia I would have done things similar too!!! Every situation is different, and we shoud all be glad this little one is being loved!! and cared for.

Some of the same people on this thread I seen on the Cookie thread, Yoshi thread, Christinee thread, and also Shanatink's thread praying they would get their missing pups back. I ask you all how this is any different? After 1 day and no vet visit she was given away.

Gen thought at one point someone might have Cookie and everyone was calling out the National Guard. Chrisitnee said someone in a Camero picked up her dog and people are telling her to call the police. Chloe was picked up on the side of the road and everyone was hoping that Shana would get a call and Chloe would be home.

Here a dog is found and given away. What would have happened if the person that found Chloe decided to just give her away?

My 3 got out of the yard a couple of weeks ago. They were gone for less then 1 hr and looked like orphans. Pebbles was inside a car and was cowering but I know it was because she is afraid~I am an excellent pet owner. Why is this different?

It was only AFTER the new "owner" took her to a vet that it was discovered a breeder had rehomed her. The owners have not been found. Everyone assumes it is because they are bad pet owners? What if they moved or changed their number?

I still think this is HORRIBLE and I am still haunted by this thread and keep thinking back on all of the other lost pups and if this is what happened to them.
Correct. She herself didn’t take her to the Vet. She gave her away to someone who could focus on helping this poor little puppy because as she stated she didn’t have the time to unfortunately. Maybe the puppy should have been handed over to animal control, but they chances of the puppy being put to sleep are pretty high if not adopted. She found a home – temporary or not – (one can’t say) for the puppy that she thought was appropriate. Is she not entitled to make that decision? It’s not like this lady was a bad person she handed her over to. This lady and her had an understanding that she would take to the Vet, have her checked and try to find her rightful owners. So I ask what is the big deal with what she did? Everything is going as it should be. The puppy was taken to the Vet, checked for a microchip, is being fed and cared for, and her owners are trying to be contacted? In my opinion this puppy is in good hands and in much better hand than if just handed over to Animal Control.

There are legal steps the one is required to obey if they find a dog? I've never seen a state statue that outlines anything to this nature. I'd love to see a staute law that deals with this. Please post one if there is actually one. Unfortunately I don't believe there is a statue. And if there is - which I highly doubt (unfortunately) how many people aware of it and how often is it adhered to?

Each state is different as far as what the time limit is. However the laws are there for lost and found property and pets fall under the catagory of property so those laws apply to pets.

What is wrong with quot and why is it not highlited ?

Yikes! Judgemental and arrogant are two words that come to mind! The OP stated that she personally did not have time to investigate about the previous owner or if the dog had been chipped She met a woman, whom she knew the family of. This kind, older woman who had experience with Yorkies and had the TIME to vet this poor, starving pup was checking to see if there was an owner anywhere in the picture. WHAT IS THE #@%^&%# PROBLEM???? I guess I'm not the only one who needs to vent LOL. To the OP, I have dared to post an innocent question months ago and also got attacked by some-know-it-alls. Guess we can't all be perfect like some people.

I am thankful that there are people like you who truly care about the well-being of sick animals. To anyone who just wants to be rude to pass the time, get a life!

See this and note that the link is under 'Animal Law'. Pay close attention to 705.104. The finder still has to prove they made a sincere effort to find the owner. This came to light months ago during the early days of the search for Gen's Cookie.

Wow! I've just recently returned to this site after being 'away' from it for a couple of years. I doubt that I will ask any questions, but will read only.

I can't believe the slamming against MommaofMia. Whether you agree or disagree on how she handled things, the important thing at the moment is that the Yorkie is being brought back to health and loved. Efforts have been made to find the owner. What else can she do.

Why are such a few allowed to stir up the post by being rude and ignorant.

MommaofMia, I know how words can hurt - please know that there are MORE of us out there that commend you for what you did.

Thank you for caring.

Exactly. The proof is in the add you place in the paper.

It sickens me that a living breathing being is considered Property but unfortunately that's how it is. And this is why I posted the onfo in the 1st place as MOST people do not know this and that's how the trouble starts. Simply trying to educate more people. Not bashing anyone.
