Sad Help Please

My neighbor found a yorkie this morning cuddled up on her sun porch. The poor girl was starved nearly to death. You can actually see her bones. There was no way I could turn this poor baby away. It literally broke my heart to hold her. I brought her home and gave her a good bath with Yorkie Splash and fed her and put clean towels in a kennel and she is now sleeping like a baby. What else do I need to do for this baby? I will take her to the vet first thing Monday morning. She is eating good and resting well, but is there anything else I need to be doing?

I just tried to take her out to go potty, but she already feels safe, so all she wanted to do is to get back in the kennel. She drank all the water I had in there and finished the food, so I know she has a full belly. She is safe and warm and hopefully knows that she is loved!

I'm sure she is getting all she needs right now. Hopefully she will get some strength back tomorrow, and will start to show her yorkie personality. It's nice to know there are people out in this world as caring as you.

Oh, thank God she found you. Heaven only knows what might have happened to her. She should be fine until a vet sees her on Monday.

Bless you for saving her.

That is so sad that all she wants is to get back in where she feels safe...poor little baby. There is no telling what that sweet girl has been through. I just can not imagine one of mine being out there on their own being able to survive for even a few hours. That just breaks my heart. I am so glad she is with you!

I could way off base here but I see you live in Missouri. Maybe she's a Mill escapee ( starved almost to death ) you say. Just saying.

I don't believe she is from a "puppy mill".. She acts like she is lost, because she likes being in my house and she is a very behaved little girl. I hope whatever the situation is, that she feels safe until I can hopefully figure out who she belongs to. I would hope that if my Mia ever became lost, someone would do the same for her. And I know there is alot of "puppy mills here in Missouri and I hate that, but it offends me that you would automatically assume she is from a puppy mill. If I could I would shut down everyone of them.

Don't be offended that was not my intent. It's just when you said she was skin n bones that's where my mind took me as it's not too common for a yorkie to be running the streets long enough to get in that shape. I would think she would have been snatched up by someone before she got in that shape. And you didn't do it to her nor do you run a mill so why would you take that personally. Unless you personally have some kind of control over the mills in your state, my comment was not meant the way you took it.
With that said I also would be very careful about who you turn her over to. I rescue dogs off the streets regularly and while I'm not in the habit of steeling someones pet. If someone said hey that's my dog my response would be something like well do you make it a habit to starve your dog. I would deff be contacting the proper authorities before turning her over to make sure I have done everything I possibly could to keep her safe . Thank you for taking her in. My hope is that you'll make her part of your family. Is there a reason it's so far fetched she came from a mill ?

Honestly, it does not take very long for a yorkie to lose weight and be matted. They are not well suited for survival on the streets.

I had a friend whose dog got out one day and was found 50 miles away! Thankfully, he was chipped and the person who found him checked for that. He was in pretty sad shape, but quickly recovered.

I would never just keep a found yorkie. First thing I suggest is that you check for a microchip and then check for signs although they do travel. Also check in the newspaper and on CL. Never give any details to anyone regarding the sex and/or markings on a lost pup. Let the owners identify...and with pictures as well!

You never know the circumstances!

Thanks for taking her in.

The only other thing I would suggest doing would be to offer her Pedialyte or Gator Aide, with half the amount of water. If she's dehydrated, this will help to bring her electrolytes back up. If she refuses the mixture, it's okay to give plain water.

Thank you for writing back. Sorry about the comment. I was tired and proably just took it wrong. Seems like since I'm from Missouri, "Puppy Mill" always comes up in anything that I write. I hate puppy mills, but they're everywhere and not just in Missouri. I love my home state and I love living here. We have a beautiful state and it's not all about "puppy mills"... Anyway thanks for clarifying what you were saying. After reading your comment, I kinda wondered if maybe that was the case, but I've lived here in this town all my life and have never heard of a puppy mill being here, but it may be possible. She acts like she has been homed though. She is very behaved, which could contribute to being starved. She may not have the energy to get rowdy yet... She is eating very good this morning and has went to the bathroom well.. Had to mop already, but it was worth it to know that she was well fed and was drinking good. Thanks again for the advice and I will deff. not let her just go to anyone. I hope and pray to have her back up again running and playing like she hopefully once did!
Say a prayer for her please!
