| Question About Heat Cycle When did your females go into heat? Chloe is 6 months and the vet in my area said he did not feel comfortable spaying her. I don't want to breed her as she is too small... she is 6 months and weighs 2 lbs... she actually dropped some weight as she has gotten older. There are vets who will spay small dogs, but not around me. She is always indoors and like I said, I have no intentions of breeding her or having a male dog in the house. ((please no bashing for my decision)) |

Let me calm your fears. Most yorkie girls bleed very minimally....if it wasn't for the change in their personality (and some don't) at times you don't know. It isn't usually a heavy blood flow, more than likely only a pinkish amount if you press a tissue to her right after she pees. But, there are panties for little girls, if you re worried.

| Thank you so much! I really appreciate your input. Since you have so much experience, will Chloe grow much more after this? I know the breeder said that all Yorkies are different. Funny thing is I picked the largest puppy out of the litter and she is now the tiniest of her siblings. The teeny tiny male is already at 4lbs. The breeder told me that some Yorkies will stop growing as early as 6 months (small growth of course, but nothing major) while others can continue... so with your experience do you think she will get to at least 4lbs? Sorry for all the questions, I just love having such educated and informed people on this board... Quote:

But, she is right yorkies grow at different rates....and some will stop growing at 6 months of age, but it's very dependent on the lines these yorkies comefrom. Now as far as will she grow after she comes into Season...that's a crap shoot too. She may very will put on a couple of growth spurts between now and her first birthday... What I'm actually attempting to say....there is no guarantee with these breed. Don't worry if she doesn't grow.....When it really comes time to spay her....make sure you have had an in depth conversation with your vet...find out what type of anesthetic he uses, make sure she has blood tests before....take all the precautions that are necessary.

| Thanks... Chloe's parents are small. Her mother was 3.5lbs and her daddy was 3lbs. The breeder did make sure I was not getting one of Boomer and Trixie's pups because I wanted a teeny tiny dog as she made no guarantees of size. I really didn't care about size, and actually hopes she gets a little bigger... she is very short! The vet in our rural area is not very... uhm, how can I put it nicely. He is a very simple vet... he practices alot on large animals as I am in the country where horses and cows outnumber dogs and cats by thousands! I would love to be able to go to a more small animal oriented vet, but they are all so far. I am sure it could be done, but part of me just wants to let it be. I am not 100% sure yet - but I am scared of putting my baby under. I know that when my shih tzu was spayed in my old college town they performed blood tests... I know this may come off as a dumb question, but I was young back then and never asked what they were for. Quote:

You mentioned that has dropped weight, she's 6 months old, have had her tested for LS/Bile Acids? At 2 pounds I don't think I'd advocate spaying either, unless it's by a qualified Toy Breed Specialists and is well versed in spaying tinies. Now there is some ramification of not spay, that being a remote possibility of mammary cancer, but pyrometria is what scares me the most. I can recommend vet that specializing in yorkies, but he's in Dallas.

| Is it bad to breed Yorkies that are small? Is Chloe prone to health problems from being small or is it more from the aspect of what can go wrong with mom during the pregnancy? She dropped from 2 lbs 11 oz to 2 lbs 4 oz... but when the vet weighed her the 1st time she had just eaten a bowl of food... we had finally found a food she liked and she was so happy to eat it! Plus, our vet tech uses a scale that has the numbers that spin around to the correct weight and with movement Chloe would go from 1 lb to 2 lbs, 14 oz... I hate those scales and wish they had a more accurate one... I have never had her tested. Are there symptoms I should watch for? She has never had any issues and she probably never lost weight... but there was a bit of difference via the vet's dinosaur age scale. Again... I really appreciate your help Quote:

I don't know how old or what your Chloe weighed when you got her. But, if she wasn't 2 pounds.....the breeder should have kept her until she was and/or if she was a reputable breeder she should have never sold her to you ....She should have been placed with no fee. As no reputable breeder would sell heartache. Does your Chloe eat, act normally no strange behavior? If not she's probably perfectly fine.....But, to be on the safe side and for your own peace of mind have her bile acid tested.

| Chloe weighed 2 lbs when I got her... She was ready at 13.5 weeks... her brother wasn't ready until 16 weeks. She eats well (hated the 1st couple of foods, but has really taken off lately) and plays so much. She has been great! I just weighed her with a food grade scale (shh... my Mom would kill me if she knew I went into her home to use her food scale to weigh my dog) and it showed 44 oz... which is 2 lbs, 12 oz... She was exactly 2 lbs at 13.5 weeks. Quote:

| Just wanted to say Uni didn't get her first heat until 13 months! I used diapers on her too, but they really don't bleed much. i would just use them while we are sleeping. You girl will most likely put on more weight. Even if she doesn't grow anymore, they will still "fill out" as the mature.
