Maybe AKC recognition is just wishful thinking on these club's part. I sure hope so. Like there aren't enough breeds already.

In my opinion when you breed a shedder with a non shedder your still gonna get somewhere down the line a shedder again. If you keep breeding a lab to a poodle you will get a shedding dog somewhere. If you want a non shedder get a breed that is just that....a poodle is a great service dog and so is the lab. Am in total agreement with you Donna, since if one looks at the explanation of recessive and dominant genes. I understand your feeling of AKC accepting the labradoodle as a recognized breed, it's my sentiments too. But, based on the direction AKC is taking, they've lost sight of their mission statement. It is no longer only the registrar of Pure Breeds only and have put into place new policies in the name of obtaining additional revenues.

Anyway, interesting thread after an inauspicious start. I really don't see what's wrong with encouraging people to look at rescues.

not if you keep breeding in the Lab...a Lab will always shed. I could see if once you breed a labradoodle to labradoodle and so on maybe but the lab is always going to be a shedder plain and simple and somewhere down the line you will get one with a shedding coat. I can buy for it being a service dog and building on their strengths but for allergies I just can't see it...there are non shedders that fit the bill for that aspect of someone that suffers from allergies...that would be just like bringing in a cotton coated yorkie into the breeding program somewhere down the line you will get it again.

Putting all the debate of mixed breeds aside, there is too much breeding going on period thats why someone would suggest going through a rescue or a shelter.

And your assumption is correct. I would suppose that is the desire of every breed club. But, I think we have to keep in mind AKC evaluates countless number non-accredited breeds, it doesn't mean they will be accepted.

You are right down. It is just as in the Yorkie, we breed silk to silk, but at any given litter we can produce a soft-coated dog.

Yes they did and do.. They were bred for service dogs for people who wanted a hypoallergenic dog. You have to go to their site to get a lot more history. But the guy, in AU who developed them will only use the dogs who DNA show they are indeed hypoallergenic. Sometimes they may be only 2 or 3 pups from a litter of 9 for example.

IMO for those problems people should just get a Standard Poodle and leave the Lab out of it. They are intelligent and can be trained for service. I think the problem is the maintenance of all that growing hair that has to be groomed, another lazy reason for mixing the breeds.

Read the history links I posted. The developer of the breed explains why people didn't want a standard poodle. It had A LOT to do with size and the strength of the dog.

But the history of the breed development and Wally Conron is very interesting.
