| claws? so, i adopted a fox terrier from a shelter awhile back. she is the sweetest thing ever, but when she gets excited, she runs and jumps into the bed with my kids - and scratches them to death! i'm too afraid to cut her nails on my own, but i don't want to spend a fortune keeping her nails groomed. any suggestions? what do you do about puppy nails? |

| Somebody's gonna have to trim them... whether it be you or a groomer or a vet. My vet's office charges, like, $5 to trim the tails. Petsmart is around $10, I think. I bought a nail clipper myself for around $5 but I rarely cut his own nails. That is the one area he just does NOT like being messed with... so it usually takes me 10 minutes just to get 1 paw done, lol. I prefer to pay and let the pros do it!

| Yes - they have to be trimmed. Walking on pavement helps wear them down like using a file on our nails. This is the only thing I don't like doing when I groom my 2 so we take them to a local dog grooming place and have them do it. It takes about 5 minutes for both our dogs and they file them after cutting. They only charge us $5 per dog and tell us we don't need an appt - although we always call ahead. Oh, and we just stay there while they do it.

| The do need to be trimmed if they are long. My boys always need theirs trimmed but Pebbles really does not since they seem to stay short from her being outside. You could also try using a file to keep them short in addition to having them trimmed by the professional of choice. Maybe if you got it done and then used a file regularly you could keep them shorter so they do not scratch your children.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I'd check with the vets office or Petsmart, you only need to go in for nail trims about every month and half to two months; you don't need a complete grooming. I've tried the Pedi-paws and safety dog nail clippers, and I prefer taking him into someone who knows what they are doing. Walking on concrete helps file the nails down, so lots of walks help, once your puppy is old enough. Don't let the nails grow too long besides hurting you, long nails cause the structure of the foot to spread, nails should never touch the floor.
