The do need to be trimmed if they are long. My boys always need theirs trimmed but Pebbles really does not since they seem to stay short from her being outside. You could also try using a file to keep them short in addition to having them trimmed by the professional of choice. Maybe if you got it done and then used a file regularly you could keep them shorter so they do not scratch your children.
