Yes - they have to be trimmed. Walking on pavement helps wear them down like using a file on our nails. This is the only thing I don't like doing when I groom my 2 so we take them to a local dog grooming place and have them do it. It takes about 5 minutes for both our dogs and they file them after cutting. They only charge us $5 per dog and tell us we don't need an appt - although we always call ahead. Oh, and we just stay there while they do it.
