YT Addict | New to YT - Is our son a Yorkie? hi everyone, My husband purchased a Yorkie from a breeder about 2 weeks ago. He was born June 22, and we named him Derby. When people stop us on the street to say hi to our puppy we get two responses. 1. Yorkie parents (without their yorkie on hand) often know he is a Yorkie 2. A lot of people tend to say he "doesn't look like a real Yorkie" The first picture I am showing is when he first came to our house. The second is when we gave him his first haircut and trimmed all his hair (off) http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pic...ictureid=67054 http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pic...ictureid=67058 So what do you think? We love him all the same regardless. He had his first vet visit today (well, through us not the breeder) and she had nothing but good things to say. She mentioned his -ears- should perk up by 6 months of age, or they may just perk and flop at the very top. She told us that they are not cropped and that could be the difference, but then I see baby Yorkies on this site and they have perky ears? We don't care either way, but it seems to be the one trait that people distinguish a "real" Yorkie. Just wondering what the YT friends thought Anyway, HI! I've found this site very helpful and I've poked my nose around at the albums. Your little ones are so cute! I can't wait to spend more time on the site and get to know you guys |

| Looks yorkie to me. You might have to tape his ears if you want them to stand. Also trimming the hair seems to help too. Genghis has extremely hairy ears so when there is too much hair growth they start to sag, but once we trim them they pop back up. |

| Derby is adorable! I think he looks like a yorkie- the vary so much from the standard! I have a boy who definitely does not fit standard but adorable anyway! His ears were down forever but went up just around 6-7 months, now they are sometimes up, sometimes half up, and sometimes down! I will attach pics! Welcome to YT!

| darling! Derby is so cute and certainly looks yorkie to me. Derby is one week younger than our Marlee Grace (born 6/16). Her left ear stood up after I shaved both ears w/ clippers. A week later, I had her second set of shots and both ears drooped! I have decided to hold off on taping for now, perhaps until after her last set of shots and rabies. Remember our babies are teething and that will make a huge difference. With my other yorkie I taped and it worked great, but waited to see if she would do it on her own. I love YT, it is a great source for yorkie info! Welcome!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | He's so cute! He looks like he might be on the bigger side. Yorkies are only suppose to get up to 7lbs max. I have two and neither of them look the way they should....they're still cute and we love them to death but they def. don't fit the standard. He is really cute and he does look Yorkie just not standard maybe...

| Hi! He looks Yorkie to me. He'd look more 'Yorkie Standard' if his ears were up, but up or down, he's an absolute cutie!! If you, or your groomer, just trim the hair on the upper half of his ears it would encourage them to stand. He's still pretty young so not to worry. Gracie Ruth's didn't start staying up until she was around 4 months. Shots & teething will sometimes make them flop. Yogi is a year old and because of the large amount of hair he has (can we say Yak?!) we have to stay on top of keeping his ears trimmed or they still flop right down. Can't wait to see more pictures as he grows and changes.

When do they reach their full size? The breeder said he should reach about 7-8 pounds? but at 9 weeks he's already half that! haha he's rambunctious for sure. and thanks! My husband told me "ask those people on the internet what they think!" because he/we get a little offended when people tell us he's not a Yorkie because he doesn't fit a standard description. How do you trim his ears without him freaking out? he hates the small trimmer and will only take to the bigger one and scissors.... lol | |

"Oh cute dogs. What are they?" "Yorkies" "Really? All of them?" "Yes" Boo, Gracie Ruth & Yogi As for the ear trimming. I got a small mustache trimmer and started out letting them smell it and rubbing it all over them. Be sure to rub both the front and the back of his ears with it. Lots of treats and praise during all the steps. Then I turned it on and did the same. I rubbed the body of the trimmer while it was on all over them. Just be careful that the blades don't touch him or you'll have a one of a kind hair do. But if you put the blades to your thumb you'll see that you really won't 'cut' him, you still have to be careful because I did nick Gracie once. Once he's doing pretty good with you rubbing him with them on you can start to shave his ears. Both front & back, go slow with lots of praise and treats. Support the side of the ear that you aren't cutting with your other hand. This also helps to give the trimmer something firm to cut against. DH had to help hold G & Yogi still the first few times. In fact for G we sat on the bed with her in between us and I did my best to get an even trim sitting in that awkward position. But it was the best way for G, it seemed to calm her to have us around her instead of just DH holding her still. Yogi wasn't so worried, but kept trying to turn around to see what I was doing. "Watcha doin Momma? Do you have food? Is that a toy? I want to chew on it Momma. Momma, watcha doin?" Boys, gotta love 'em! Now neither one barely needs to be held to have their ears trimmed. It could take a couple of days to get to the part where you can actually cut his ears. The idea is to get him to understand that it's not a bad thing, maybe not his favorite thing, but not a bad thing. Stop whenever you see his stress level hit it's limit. You always want this to be as pleasant as possible for him. I think with G it took until day 3 before I was actually able to trim an ear. Then we had to stop and give her a break before I did the other one. But he's still quite young, 9 weeks right? It was easily 16 weeks before Gracie's started standing up. I'm don't think I'd worry about trimming his for several weeks yet. Take advantage of this time to strengthen your bond with him, let him see that you will protect him and keep him safe. That will go a long way to getting thru the 'scary' time with the trimmer.
