| Need info on size and if this is right dog for me Hi, just a worried newby here with a question about size and if this is the right dog for me and what your opinions are. I wanted a yorkie about 5-6 lbs and the yorkie I had planned on purchasing does not seem to be growing as big as I'd like her to be. She is 6 weeks old right now and weighs in just under a pound. I've been told that you triple her weight at 6 weeks to figure out her adult weight. That would be 3 lbs., does that sound right? I have children and an 8 lb maltese. I am very concerned that a 3 lb yorkie may not be a good fit for our home. The puppy had to be taken off it's mother and bottle fed since 3 days old so she's very sociable and a wonderful puppy. The vet seems to think that since she wasn't breastfed that her growth is not what another puppy that was breastfed would be but that as she starts eating food she may have a growth spurt and get bigger than we think... I am wondering what are your thoughts of how big you think she'll be, has anyone had a 6 week old puppy that weighed a pound? And if she ends up being 3 lbs. how sturdy are these little dogs? I don't have experience with yorkies, I've only owned maltese my whole life. Thanks so much. |

| When I got Lady at 7 weeks, she weighed in at 8oz.Back then I knew NOTHING about yorkies and assumed her tiny size was totally normal.NOw,at 15 months old,she weighs in at 2lbīs and I have 2 kids (8 and 5 years old),another 8lb yorkie and a cat.Iv never had a problem.Infact, although Iv heard that yorkies and children dont go well together,Iv had the oposite experience..mine all get along wonderfully. My son is hyperactive (adhd) and even he is great with her.Your yorkie pup could grow to be bigger than you expect..the rule of thumb doesnt always work so dont go by that. When I got Jess at 8 weeks old,she weighed in at 2lbīs,which meant she should have weighed under 6 as an adult..but as I said before, shes at 8 bīs and still growing at only 10months old, which means the rule of thumb didnt work AT ALL with her.. The tiny ones ARE delicate, they have tiny bones exactly like those of a chicken.Ladys legs are as thin as my 5 year old daughters little finger..also,being so small you have to be very careful around the house. They can be stepped on,get stuck in small places, shut in doors etc..you have to have eyes in the back of your head. With the very small ones, you have to be aware of hypoglycemia ALWAYS,because they dont grow out of it like the regular sized yorkies usually do. Lady is very healthy and I have never had a single problem with her,not even when she was spayed..but I must admit that we watch her like a hawk.We have had her on high calorie canned food for the past few months because she needed to put on some weight..but even then she only went from 2lbīs to 2lbīs 4 ounces. We also have to give her treats with glucose in them (2 or 3 a day) to keep her blood sugar at normal levels and make sure she eats at least 3 times a day.. All in all I would deffinately think about getting a VERY small yorkie.Being small doesnt mean they will be sick, but it DOES mean you will have to be extra careful around the house, they are a BIG responsabilty. |

| I think at 6 months it is too hard to determine size (still too young). My vet goes by doubling the 4 month weight and adding a pound, which has been right in my experience. I have a 6 pound Maltese and a 2 pound yorkie. My yorkies size has not been a factor at all. The older dog knows instinctively how rough she can be with him. However, I do sometimes worry about my 2 pound yorkie being too rough with my 6 pound Maltese. How big were your yorkies parents. That should also help determine size. Karen |

| It's me again, Karen. Wanted also to tell you that I have an 8 year old and a 6 year old boy. My little yorkie loves to play with them (much moreso than my maltese). |

| I think the kid aspect depends on the kids. Just as long as your kids know to be careful, they should be ok. Since you already have a maltese though, it seems like your kids are probably used to small breeds. As for the weight, who knows!!! My Hercules was 2 pounds at 10 weeks and 2.2 pounds at 12 weeks. I've heard to double the 3 month weight or triple the 2 month weight. Well at 5 1/2 months he's 5.2 pounds. So that's more than both predictions. Good luck and welcome to yorkie talk!

| Thank you all for your responses Thank you so much! I appreciate everyone's responses. I feel better. I think I am going to go ahead and get her. I will be able to bring her home in two weeks. I'll be posting again I'm sure. Jodi |

| its been my experience at 6 weeks you are safe at 3x's plus 1 lb the weight and 12 weeks 2x's the weight. Puppies tend to lose weight during the weaning process around 6 weeks then worming (6-8 weeks) they lose the puppy bloat, settling into a normal weight gain. hope this helps Kimberly
