I think the kid aspect depends on the kids. Just as long as your kids know to be careful, they should be ok. Since you already have a maltese though, it seems like your kids are probably used to small breeds.
As for the weight, who knows!!!
My Hercules was 2 pounds at 10 weeks and 2.2 pounds at 12 weeks. I've heard to double the 3 month weight or triple the 2 month weight. Well at 5 1/2 months he's 5.2 pounds. So that's more than both predictions.
