| So Mad! I was walking Ringo and Lucy on a trail this evening. There was no one else around when all of a sudden, two, unknown, big dogs came running out of a field toward us. I think they were 'bird dogs' or 'coon hounds' because of the howling/braying like sound they were making. I quickly picked up Lucy (sorry Ringo!) cause she's 4 lbs and Ringo is my 15 lb Westie. I was yelling at the dogs to Go Home and Shoo and they were circling all around me and jumping up to where I was holding Lucy. Every time she would growl. This went on for about 5 minutes; there was no one around at all. Finally I started yelling to PLEASE GET YOUR DOGS thinking they might belong to one of the houses across the river. I was terrified that they were going to hurt Lucy OR that Ringo would go off on them and they would hurt him. I have to give Ringo so much credit; normally he is very reactive . . . but he stayed calm and cool and just kept walking forward with me. He didn't bark, growl, or try to attack them. If he had, the situation could have easily gotten out of control because they were three times his size. Finally, a man and little girl came and started calling the dogs away. I am DEFINITELY getting me some pepper spray! And we do have a leash law in our county. And the sign on the trail clearly says all dogs must be leashed. |

| Thank goodness you and your dogs are OK. Unleashed dogs are a pet peeve of mine for several reasons. Not only is it inconsiderate to others but it's also a safety issue for the unleashed pet. We have one neighbor who has her dog unleashed all the time and I can't tell you how many times it just sits in the street and I have to stop and drive around it. Someday someone is going to come around the corner and not see him. That will be a sad day.

Senior Yorkie Talker | That's such a scary thing you had to experience but you reacted well and sounds like Ringo also reacted very well! I wish people would obtain some common sense and respect for others and learn to leash their pets not only for their safety but for everyone around them. At least everyone is ok and hopefully next time they will leash their dogs.

| wow, that was scary. glad you and your babies are ok. is it ok to use pepper spray on dogs? would it work for sure if they are vicious or would it just piss them off and make them more aggressive? does anyone know?

Just a thought regarding attracting the attention of people: years ago, women in our area were encouraged to purchase police whistles. You can yell for help all you want, but one blast off a whistle tends to turn heads. They're also good for hikers who get lost ... the sound travels much further than calls do. But, perhaps if you gave a blast off a whistle you could attract human help faster? | |

| I can imagine how scared you were - so glad it turned out alright! I live in a small town, and if I walk down the street one way there are 2 dogs loose at different times of the day. I never know when they are going to open their door and out they will come. The other way at the end of the street there is a Roti who freaks out when we walk by, at a screen door! I always pick him up - I figure a screen between me and THAT is way too dangerous!

| I know how you feel! Especially since something simular just happened to me on Monday with my neighbors big dog. I'm glad you and your babies are okay. I have decided to take Cerise to a wonderful peoples park at the Arboretum shopping center here in Austin, for our walks. There is a walking trail and at the bottom, there is a duck pond. There aren't dogs and even if someone has one they are usually a small breed and on a leash, because it's a very nice outdoor shopping, restaurant and hotel complex. They have a lot of out-of-town visitors there. We went on Monday late afternoon and she truly enjoyed it. So did I

| Oh I hate it when that happens (to me and to others!) Pepper spray for dogs...good. I was thinking though that the reason PWBDGL (People With Big Dogs Go Leashless) is they think nothing will happen to the big dog. In addition to pepper spray, I'm going to mix up some blue or green food coloring, and maybe some skunk scent. If the big dogs came home stinky and needing a bath everyday they might take more interest for their dogs' whereabouts???

| I know how scary that can be. I had Bailey outside with me and this pit bull came running over to us and I just grabbed Bailey and yelled to the neighbors to please come get their dog. They thought it was cute that he was trying to get my little 1 1/2 lb baby. I now refuse to take her out in the front yard.

| Why do people think it is cute when their big dog tries to get a little one? I have a new puppy. I can't wait to take him for a walk (after his shots) especially since I have a small neighborhood park across the street from me. I see that it is posted to have your dog leashed, but I see people all the time with their dogs unleashed. I guess a lot of people think rules don't apply to them.
