| Ok, now I'm a little upset So I just took Jasper outside to potty and walk around in the front yard area of our apartment complex. My neighbor a couple doors down has a seeing eye dog. So I had Japser out on his leash getting some fresh air and I guess her dog had to potty too so she just opened her door and let her dog out. Well, being that its a service dog I figured it was nice so I didn't panic but just started to walk Jasper the other way and the dog saw him and started growling and barking and lunged at him!!! This dog is a like 60lb dog at least and little Jasper is a 4lb puppy!!! I couldn't believe it! So then she hears the commotion and yells for her dog to come inside and her husband (who can see just fine) looks out too. Not one of them even said a simple sorry or anything! I got in trouble a few months ago when I had Jasper out in the yard without a leash and she does it all the time!!!! Uhhh!!! Sorry, I just had to vent!!!! I hope this doesn't become an ongoing problem when it starts to get nice outside! So I called the apartment manager and complained so at least there was something on file in case this happens again. |

| You may well have an ongoing problem. She may think since it is a seeing eye dog that gives her special privileges concerning the American Disability act. It should not for something like this, but you know how some people think. Good Luck.

| Yeah, i had some problems like this but mine live 3 houses down. They are huge police dogs (can't think of the name). One of them attacked Ella a few months back and now i'm terrified to walk that way w/ her. It makes me so mad when someone's animal will attack another person's animal and the owner will not say sorry or even acknowledge that their pet has hurt another. Since she's blind she obviously couldn't see what her dog was doing but that does not justify her husband not saying anything. Sorry for the long comment, this topic sets me off b/c i've went through it too. =]

| Yeah I remember last summer before I had Jasper I saw her let her dog out back to play a lot so I mean, I want the doggies to be able to play outside like dogs should but I don't want any problems. *sigh* |

do you have leash laws ? you could suggest a really long long leash for her to use on her service dog - that way she has control & can stay in her home and he can sitll explore.... I've had similar problems in my apartment especially after work - others are out at the same time so I started waiting a bit before I walk my girls & if I see a big dog - I go the other way - if I see more than one dog - I stay in my own courtyard and just go realllllly slow it sucks that people don't bother to say I'm sorry if their dog goes after another - it's simple MANNERS ! But I hesitate to say that about a blind person in case she can't see what's happening.... | |

A guide dog should not be let out on its own unless it is contained in a fenced yard. A person receiving a guide dog must spend 4 weeks at the dog school learning the commands, bonding, and relieving their dog on leash. It is also stressed that the dog be clean and well-behaved in order to be accepted by the public. If you continue to have this problem, find out the dog guide school she attended and give them a call. They will be quick to remedy the situation. (Your apt manager should be able to find out for you) And please remember that no matter how large or small the dog, they should always be under control and on a leash in public. Anything that interferes with a working dog (like loose dogs jumping on them) can cause problems with their training and they may have to be retired. So have the same respect for others as you would like for yourself.

| There is no excuse for the owner's behavior. Do not allow an exception, because the dog should not be running on its own. I'm sorry you are experiencing this. It can be scarey and that dog could attack your lil one, so do be careful and don't fail to report repeat behavior that occurs.

| That might be a service dog, but it certainly isn't a good one. They are trained to ignore other people and dogs, and it shouldn't have reacted to you or your dog AT ALL. That dog would be considered a failure and removed from the home if the trainers knew what happened.

| Rules are rules. I hate to sound harsh, but blind or not, if your apartment complex rules state that a dog must be on a leash when walked, then that's that. I'm glad that you reported it to the office there. If it happens again she shouldn't be allowed to have her animal there anymore. Could you imagine what might have happened to your little baby because someone else thinks they can break the rules?

| Thanks for all the input! You know honestly even though its the rules, I wouldn't have made any big deal about it if the dog did what it was supposed to and not come running at us. I'm a very courteous person when I walk my dog and even though he would just lick someone to death, I don't ever let him run up to people or other dogs unless they say its ok. So this whole situation upsets me because not only do I expect other people to follow the Oregon leash law, but I would expect to hold a service dog at a little higher standard. |
