Animal Smiley 036 7 week old yorkie

I adopted my yorkie puppy 3 days ago. She is a 1lb 3 oz female yorkie. She was the runt. She has short hair with a few sprouts. I was told she was pure-bred and her sister who was already adopted had the full fuzz going on. I also took my pup to the vet the next day and the poor baby came home with 2 meds for worms and an antibiotic for a respiratory infection. I was wondering, why my pup has short hair and ailments and the rest of the litter look like normal yorkie puppies. She is my first yorkie and I love her dearly, but was wondering if maye because she is the runt, she isn't growing her coat. Does that mean she will always have short hair, or is she possibly not full blooded as I was told. She is very very tiny. Her ears also flop over her little head. Theres no question of giving her back or worrying about money, I paid the full price of a pure-bred puppy, I am more so just curious as to what's to be expected she is 3 times smaller than her litter mates, and she was sick. I know that this doesn't mean a lot but she is ckc registered and her parents both looked like the standard yorkie, and her siblings did as well, but to me she looks like a little chi with floppy ears. Adorable, but I was just curious if anyone else had a puppy like her.
My second question is what is a good way to help her with her digestion? She poops maybe once a day and such a tiny amount, her belly is also very distended and rock hard. She went to the vet and is going again friday, but I don't want her to be uncomfortable so long. She is eating a special puppy diet for yorkies the vet gave me. So I think her diet is good, but again, I don't know what to expect with the little runt.

I'm sorry, I honestly don't have any advice. I just wanted to congratulate you on your new baby! I am sure that some veteran YorkieTalkers can offer up some advice.
The only thing I would say is just make sure she has food and a full bowl of fresh water at all times. Good luck, congrats again, and don't forget to post some pictures of your little one!!

Wish I could help but I don't know alot myself. Maybe by morning a most experienced yorkie mom will respond. You might post what type of diet your using even tho vet recommended it. I've read here that some owners will use baby food (chicken & rice). Go to the Health & Diet thread & see if helps answer your question. I think it's great you adopted.

Since she's soooo little you really should keep some nutri-cal or karo syrup on hand for emg. Its to treat hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Please type hypoglycemia in your search engine & read up on it. It usually occurs in the first year of the pups life. But can happen to adult dogs, too. You might try
www.yorkiepassion.com/yorkiepuppyhypoglycemia.htm

Good luck. Thinking of you & your tiny one. Please post updates.

If the vet recommended a food I'd keep her on that for a while at least.
Sher's obviously having the best attention from you. Give her time to grow a little. Sometimes their ears will flop when they're teething, give her love and time which is what you are doing love. She's only young yet.

Congratulations.

I don't have much advice either only that she is too young to be away from mum , the norm is about 12 weeks. however you have come to the right place and will get lots of good advice. Can't wait to see pics By the way welcome to YT

Welcome to YT and congrats on your new baby girl. Wow, from all that I have read here on YT, you need to be extra extra careful. The consensus here is yorkie puppies are not suppose to leave their mommy until 12 weeks of age. Runts, as you call her, need extra attention and are sometimes kept even longer to give them a better chance at a full healthy life. Do a search on nutrical at the top of the page, lots of people keep that on hand for babies. 7 weeks is still very very young, and her ears will still go up and down for a while, especially when she's teething. Then again, if the ears never go up, don't be too disappointed, they're cute that way too! (see pics below)
Be very careful with your new princess. I bet the more experienced breeders and owners will chime in with more helpful hints and tips. I myself never had such a tiny puppy. My baby boy came home on his first birthday.

Hi! Congrats on your new little one. I also got my baby far too young. We got Reesie when he was 7 wks. We had a rough go at first, but things got better, just hang in there. Patience is the key.

Reesie's hair was a mess when we first got him also, but it soon grew out and now he looks like his normal self. Sometimes I think their baby hair can look funky until it grows out. I think it's cute though.

Keep a close eye on your baby. As soon as she starts to act sluggish or tired you need to give her some nutrical or karo. Also, if your breeder has her on hard food already you should add just a bit a water to make it softer for her to chew. You don't want her to waste all her energy just on trying to crunch her food.

When we got Reesie he also had worms. The worms are causing her tummy to be bloated. You said the vet gave you some meds for her to take for the worms. Make sure you keep an eye on her tummy to make sure it goes back down in a few days. If not she may need more worm meds. Just talk to the vet he will know what to do.

Hope this helps. Congrats again on your new baby! Post some pics of her so we can see how cute she is!

Congrats on your new puppy!!! You are going to love her to death...Here is the only advice that I can give you

1. Nurtical---2x's per day
2. Keep her warm---If it's cold where you live, forget taking her outside
3. Find a food that is good for her AND that she likes...there is no point in giving her food that she doesn't like cuz she will not eat it..
4. And because she is so young she is going to sleep alot...just make sure when you have her out she playes alot..

I had to give Izzy real baby food..Stage 2 ground chicken with in with corsely chopped dry food... She is 15 weeks now and she still gets baby food once a day..

You will have to find what works with you and your furbaby These are just something that have helped me...It was like bring a newborn baby home for the first time and I was wreck..lol... You will be a great mom!!!

Congratulations on your new yorkie! Even though her ears aren't standing and her hair is not quite as long as the others were, I'm still sure she's a Yorkie! I got mine at 8 weeks, and his are up and down and sometimes back and forth. His hair isn't long yet, but I can tell it's only a matter of time, as I'm sure it will be with your girl. My breeder sent mine home on Puppy Chow, the vet, though, has me transitioning him to a better formula (Science Diet for mine, but every vet is different, and usually know what they are talking about). Just keep the vet's office on speed dial and YT bookmarked, and I know you'll be a great mama!

Congratulations on your little one. 7 weeks is very young and she is very small. Seems you are giving her alot of TLC and that is just what she will need. You might want to give her just a little bit of goats milk. Not too much as it could cause a tummy upset if she get too much. I use the kind that comes in the can and you dilute. It only keeps for a few days and the size that she is you will not use much before you have to throw it away. You are going to the vet with her and that is great. Also as already stated make sure you keep her warm. Good luck with that new baby sounds like she has a good home.

I agree, if you do give baby food please read that it doesn't contain onion powder allot do. Always have water out for her.
My baby is also a runt, I did not get her that young though. She does have really thin fine hair that makes her look like a rat (adorable one). I saw a pic of one of the other YT member baby with fine hair and once they have a full coat they look gorgeous. And so far I have NO matting problem with her, my thick full coat girl has matts every day.

I think floppy ears are way too cute.

In all honesty, if it were me, I would return the pup to the breeder. (BTW, "buying" from a breeder is not "adopting.") The breeder you got her from does NOT sounds like a very reputable one. She sold you a runt, at only 7 weeks old. (WAY too young--12 weeks is recommended by reputable breeders--and not even legal in some states.) The dog is sick and you are questioning if she is even purebred at this point, which is always a possibility.

I realize that you are already attached and are not likely to return her. (Completely understandable.) However, if you're taking a realistic look at the situation, it's not ideal. This is why so many stress the importance of researching first and taking one's time to find an ethical breeder.

In regards to her ears, it could be a genetic fault, or it could be because they have not been trained to stand. Try keeping them shaved, inside and out and possibly taped to get them standing. Given that she is the runt AND sick, be sure to educate yourself on the signs of low blood sugar and how to prevent AND treat it. Little ones are very prone to it, especially given her/your situation.

My suggestion is: If your sure your going to "keep" her than don't worry about fur/ears phyical stuff. You need to tend to her health first & formost as she is SO very little. If the phyical stuff is more important & you have questions, then I'd return her now than later.
Wondering why you chose the smallest if you felt she didn't look like a yorkie?
