| Jackson caught a BIRD! OMG! Scared the poop outta me. I'm in Maryland, stuck in this snow storm, we've got over 2 feet of snow by now. Certain areas are up to almost 4 feet because of snow drifts. So we've been letting the dogs (I'm stuck at my dad's house with Jackson and their 2 dogs) on the porch. Somehow, 2 birds got into the porch and were stuck in there and we didn't know. So the dogs were going nuts in the porch trying to after them, and we're trying to get all 3 dogs back in the house. All the sudden.... Jackson's got a BIRD IN HIS MOUTH! Like a freakin' Retriever or something. I went "JACKSON, NO!" and he was just going back and forth (the porch isn't very big) and he finally dropped it, I thought the bird was dead but it quickly flew up onto a ledge on our porch. I couldn't believe my 12lb Yorkie had actually hunted a bird, and caught it in mid-air! It was a baby bird but still. In all seriousness, don't birds carry diseases and stuff? Should I be worried about that?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Wow, good instincts, Joey chases them, but never comes close to catching them. Birds do carry disease, but if there's nothing special going around in your area, I imagine it's ok. Glad your story had a happy ending!

| Hehe, Jackson says thanks. Quote:
I think the only reason Jackson caught it was because he was on the porch! LOL, otherwise, he just chases them too.

| Wow, that is pretty neat! I think he'll be ok regarding the disease, my mom used to tie our cat outside and she caught birds all the time, now many years later, she is still alive and healthy. Too bad you didn't get a picture! |

| Well! For a bird to be flying around in this blizzard... it has to be a healthy bird or it would be dead by now. Probably worst fear would be if he ate the bird, which he didn't, yet, so I don't think you have to worry... Just learned: I have a very smart yorkie...let them out and back in... by the time I got to her to dry her off from all the snow...she was sitting in front of the pellet stove drying herself! Oh and sooo funny... when first let out she stuck her head through the doggy door into a wall of snow and went to the other doggy door and did it again! Looked like a big snowball stuck on a yorkie body! My new pup rolls in the snow like most roll in the grass or leaves.??? I know, where was my camera?????

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Poor birdie - but it's natural for them to do this - Both mine have caught them in mid air back when I had a nice fenced in yard (different times - same result - neither bird made it) I was lucky I was right there - so never saw anything gruesome. while I felt bad for the birds - I don't think they would have considered them a meal - it was more of a "Hey mom - Look what I did !" kind of thing - they ran around the yard very proud of themselves ....I hated laughing but it was like they discovered a real live squeaky toy. |

And wow, you've got some talented doggies. I don't know if he could catch one in the fenced in yard. I just felt bad for the bird -- I didn't want him to kill it! haha!

| Sunshine got a bird last year . But his real prey seem to be any rodents . He was about 6 months old and got a baby bunny that wandered into his enclosure . And he goes nuts on the moles and voles in the yard , I think he has got 2 or 3 of them now. He sure is proud when he hunts something up .
