| What to do when no one is home - 2 Yorkies Over the weekend, we bought another male yorkie to keep our Charlie company. No name for the new baby yet, maybe Theodore - we'll call him Teddy or Benjamin (Bennie) or Louie (Prince Charles and King Louie...). Charlie is 18 weeks old and weighs 4.5 lbs. The new guy is 11.5 weeks and weighs 1.3 lbs. Right now, Charlie is getting used to having the new guy around. Charlie wants to play with him but sometimes he is a little bit rough, he's just so much bigger. He is not aggressive though, the eat together, usually out of the same bowl and have been sleeping together. Charlie can now go up and down steps on his own, so he has free reign of the house, even when we are gone. He is pretty much completely potty-trained. My question is what to do when no one is home with them (usually only for 3 hours max at any time), just until Charlie calms down his play with the little guy and/or the little guy gets bigger... I would love to let them both have free reign of the house when the are alone. Should we put the baby in a crate (we are not crate training him, but we do have one at home) and leave Charlie out so that they can see/smell each other? Or is it better to put the baby in our upstairs bedroom (completely doggie proof) with the door shut? Just wondering which option is better for my two guys. We got a second yorkie to keep Charlie company and I just want to do what is best for both of them.

| Aww they're both so sweet, how lucky to get two new babies so close together! Maybe you could try getting an x-pen for the smaller baby and use it at least until he's potty trained and used to Charlie, that way you're keeping all the mess in the same area while keeping him safe but still able to see his older brother. Just make sure you put a potty pad, separate food/water and something for comfort (a toy that smells like you or a blankie/bed) in there so he doesn't get lonely. I would worry that being in the bedroom alone might be too lonely for the little one and could cause separation issues if he knows his big brother is roaming free. As for the crate, I would worry he might potty in it and that could start bad habits. I think that would be my approach to keeping them both happy/healthy, hope that helps. | I would put your newbie in a crate or x pen until he is potty trained. Leave him where he could see his new brother. I love the name Teddy for him because he looks like a teddy bear. Both your boys are so precious. Congratulations! |

| Thank you for the advice. I will look in to xpens. Do you think that Charlie will be able to hop over it and get in? We will probably name the little guy Teddy... I am making the deciding much harder than it needs to be.

| I have something similar to what Mary posted. One way to prevent them from jumping over the top is never ever pick them up when they are in the ex-pen. Always open the door and pick them up that way, or let them out. Do the same when putting them in. I know it sounds tedious, but that way they associate the door with the proper way of entering and exiting the ex-pen. If they figure out that jumping is a way to get out, well then kudos to you for having such smart boys! My boy is more than capable of getting out himself, but he never even tried. Good luck!

| Ahhh They are both so cute! I would definitely xpen the little one until he gets a little bigger, just for his own safety. |

| My Charlie is 5 and we just adopted a rescue Yorkie, Henry, from a small breed rescue organization. Henry is 2, housetrained (mostly), and fits in very nicely. I give them free reign of the kitchen and family room, but keep them blocked out of going into the living room and upstairs. It works pretty well and Charlie doesn't seem too put out by it. They eat the same food, drink the same water, and have begun to groom each other. The grooming part is absolutely hilarious. We caught some flak for naming him "Henry", but we love calling for "Charlie -boo" and "Henry-potomus", aka "Prince Charles" and "King Henry". Very regal. If I could figure out how to post a picture of the two of them I would. Patty |
