| Financial side of being owned by furbabies It doesn't look like anyone is going to claim my foster Yorkie, Sophie. I've posted ads & fliers trying to locate her owners. I took Sophie for a basic vet exam yesterday & the vet said she's in fairly good health, considering whoever had her before took minimal care of her. Sophie is such a sweet, loving dog! It makes me so upset that her previous owners didn't give her the best care! Sophie will need a dental (about $370) and all of her shots and a bloodwork test (about $190). I'm used to these costs for one furbaby (I have a rescued mini dachshund, anyone see a theme here? ), but I'm not sure I can handle the cost of having 2 furbabies. Sophie is supersweet, a teeny 2.14 lb bundle of love! She's very loving & she's getting attached to me. I've been working with her on the pottytraining & sitting. I'm having a difficult time deciding what to do. Any advice on this? |

| I say you keep her and figure out what to do along the way. If you don't take care of her, who will? She came into your life for a reason....

| Go with your heart and you will make the right decision. As far as her shots...I would have titers done to see if she even needs them...you don't want to over vaccinate her. I would also have a bile acid test done to see how her liver is functioning. I know what you mean about the whole thing though...I just took in 2 little boys to help find them an appropriate home and one of them is staying. I currently have 4 but will have 3 once I place Nikki. The cost of 2 as apposed to 1 isn't that drastic and with tiny ones you won't even notice it until you need to see the vet. Just keep some extra $$ on hand for such occasions or keep a credit card on hand for them only...that's what I do and that way I'm never caught short. Good luck...and just follow your heart...she came to you for a reason. |

| I say keep her! I believe that God put her in your path for a reason and he will provide your needs! The way you talk about her, You already sound smitten by her.

| I am not sure what to tell you. Do you know of anybody that would be able to adopt Sophie from you. Maybe your vet would know of a family that can take care of her. It is hard I know how quickly you become atached but the expenses are also so expensive. I am sorry I don't know what to tell you to do. I hope others on here will have better advice |

I literally saw Sophie walking in neighborhood street close to my school (I'm a teacher) and I had to stop and pick her up. I can't stand the thought of animals being run over, even squirrels! | |

| After the initial costs are over, you should be set unless there are health issues down the road. Plus you have the added benefit that you can put her in a purse and take her with you anytime you want to go somewhere.

| I think that that little baby was sent to you.....the vet was right....you don't see stray Yorkies every day! Yes the beginning costs are steep but later down the road it will be worth every cent! She will repay you with happiness and smiles every day! Good Luck.....

| Sophie has been scanned twice. The first day I found her & yesterday (just in case!). I know it would break my heart if someone found my Bobbie Bella & didn't try to find me first... |

| Hopefully you will find her owners. If not, it sounds like she has already found a place with you! |

| Dogs with unknown backgrounds can rack up big vet bills. My Lady is a rescue and was healthy when I adopted her at age four. When she turned six her "genetic time bombs" started going off and I now spend about $5,000 a year on medications and routine tests to monitor her various health problems. That does not include unexpected vet visits which usually add another $1,000 to that figure. Good for you for thinking long term, especially when you already have one. If you don't think you can afford another one, can you contact a rescue group? Or perhaps your vet could help you find her a wonderful home? |
