| Hi Im new and need some advice PLEASE! I have been reading your site for days and I really like it and need some help. I recently adopted a yorkie male from a shelter. He is blind in 1 eye and weighs about 7 lbs. They say he is between 8 and 10 but I think he is older. I took him to a vet and she was unsure of his age. His teeth are infected and some need to be removed. He also sleeps alot but seems to be eating well. My question s how do I know his age? Im scared I took a dog that may die soon with all of his problems. I also own another yorkie who is 1 1/2. I want to do all I can from my senior yorkie. |

| Welcome Mary Mack and glad you joined Yorkie Talk. I personally do not have an older Yorkie and hopefully you will receive replies to your post with members who do have senior Yorkies. I think it is such big hearted of you to rescue your senior Yorkie from the shelter. What is his name? If you'd like to, please post pictures of him as we all here "love the photo's" I wish you the best with him - and I bet he is precious! It may always be a mystery to his actual age but if his problems only consist of some bad teeth i would imagine your vet will take care of the problem and see no reason why he would suffer or pass away from it if his teeth problem is corrected. Regarding the eye, my friend has a Chi with a blind eye, he had to have it removed and the eye lids sewn but the Chi is happy as can be with his one eye and he is adorable.

| Welcome, and what a kind heart you have. I'm sure your vet will fix his teeth, and being blind in one eye should not limit his life span. How lucky he was to have found you!! Being around a younger one will probably stimulate him to be more "puppy" like. We have a 3 legged "very old soul" who really perked up when gracie came home with us. I think he thinks it's his job to "show her the ropes" , and her really protects her.........she ideolizes him. He has MANY serious health concerns including spondylosis of his spine which he is on medication for daily. I think gracie gives him a reason to get up and move around. The vet is amazed.................. I so hope everything goes well for you and your brood. Give it some time, patience, and most of all , love...............and things will be fine. I would make sure the food is for seniors........and get regular check-ups on the teeth. |

| What a great thing you have done. Maybe because of his teeth he is so laid back. I am sure they hurt him and once he has the removed he will perk up. They learn to eat just as good with out teeth. Once he gets use to his new surrounding hes will be Ozzie's best friend. I hope Bernie has a long and wonderful life with you...........Cindy |

| I have an older Yorkie mix - I was told she was around 5 when we got her, but when I took her to my vet, he estimated her to be older. It's hard when you don't know for sure, I know. Dogs can live a long time, even with problems. My dog Chi-Chi from my childhood lived to be around 13 years old, she was a Yorkie. Rescues can be tough, but they are worth every minute of your time spent. My Sandy will NOT leave my side for anything, she is so loyal. I think she knows the meaning of the word "grateful" Sandy was pretty laid back, but on Sunday we brought home her sister, Tia and she has really pepped up since then. She thinks she needs to show her the ropes and is doing an excellent job Sandy also had bad teeth when she came to us, but we've been on a strict brushing schedule and I had her teeth cleaned by the vet. At her last visit to the vet, he said he was thrilled with how well her teeth are doing. I would love to see pictures of your new addition - welcome to Yorkie Talk!
