Good! That's what he deserves!

That would be SO kind of you to take him in to foster. Hoping you get your Cookie back very soon.

You've got such a good heart fostering this little one when you are having a hard time yourself. I hope that you are rewarded for your good deed, and Cookie is home soon.

Hello I have just recently joined your site, I am an Animal Control Officer and I have been employed by the largest Animal Control Agency in the Nation for 12 years. I have read your your story and my heart goes out to you. I also have owned Yorkies and would not live without them, they are wonderful! Although I could purchase a purebread from a breeder, and I do know plenty of breeders, I have been allowed the wonderful pleasure of owning these dogs through the generosity of a lady who had children and did not have the time for these dogs. First of all I do not think that small children should be allowed around these very smart and fragile dogs! They are very delicate (my dogs are both under 3 lbs) and they also can be scared for life by mishandling, which most children when not accompanied by an adult will most likely do! The dogs dont ever forget! It has also been my experience that the dogs are small and more than often escape. Although because of the breed they are a prime target for theives! If you live in a secluded area, the things that are most likely to happen to your small dog would be (1) Owls, hawks (2) Coyotees or just stray dogs (3) Someone picked the dog up because it was loose. In the first 2 instances you wont get the dog back, but hopefully someone did pick the dog up and is probably waiting for you to post a large reward, this could be a drug addict or just someone hoping to make some money at your loss! You should check with your neighbors, check their side of the fencing for any loose boards, missing boards, look for evidence such as fur on the fence or in the yard. I am not sure of the laws where you live but if your dog did get out into someones yard, the fault would fall on you, even if their dogs made the hole, it is your responsibility to keep your dog in your yard! I don't mean to sound so uncaring, but I have seen this happen to many times. If there is a hole you need to find it now before your other dogs find it first! It is a tragedy to loose your dog, but remember you have other dogs that look to you for their safety, if you are going to get another dog look at it as a wonderful gift from a wonderful person who is unselfish enough to see that this dog deserves your love!

Welcome Sandy! Your experience as an animal control officer will be very interesting to the other YT members! Thanks for signing up!

Regarding your advice, Gen is offering a very generous reward. She has gone to great lengths to find her little Yorkie, named Cookie. SHe has signs, flyers, and sign on her car, she has contacted the media, every vet in the area, and that's just the beginning! I have been on YT for a long time, and I have heard many stories of lost yorkies. And there have been many happy endings. I don't think, though, that I can recall anyone going to the great lengths that Gen has to recover her Cookie. She is like a tiger fighting for her cub!

Thank you all. Hi Sandy and welcome to YT. I have considered all those scenarios trust me. The not knowing is what keeps me searching.
By now probably thousands of people where I live know about Cookie.
Today at PetCo I saw a Humane Society booth and went up to see an adorable Maltese and Cocker Spaniel. They asked if I needed any help.
I told them I was just passing by, we got to talking about pets and I was asked what kind of pet I had. I said a yorkie that is missing. One of the ladies held her chest and asked " Please dont tell me all those street signs and flyers is not your Yorkie?!" Yes my baby is missing.
So far I have only gotten 1 call of someone mentioning the reward money. This person was almost insisting that this dog was Cookie. The dog was about 10 lbs! I said , if you cut that dog in half ...my dog is still smaller than that. They kept telling me but this is a small dog about 10 lbs only.

Thanks Alison I was just giving some in sight from another point of veiw. There are alot of ways these days to look for your dog, those are some of the ways we would also advise to a lost owner! I hope she finds her dog, I know it is a very traumatic experience, and I wish her the best, good luck, I will also pray for her dogs safe return!

Hello Gen some people describe dogs differently, please have a look at the dog, maybe the hair from the dog makes it look heavier or maybe the people that have the dog dont know to much or anything about weight it is worth it to have a look, you never know. It wont hurt to look! Good Luck!

This dog had a collar on. The person told me this and still wondered if someone else put a name tag/collar on my dog. I got in contact with the actual lady who found the small dog and animal control found the owner. Once I found this out I let that first caller know for sure it wasnt my dog.
I really do believe that so many people cant estimate a dog's weight, sex or breed. I've had 2 calls so I can ID a yorkie and they said it was a male. Both turned out to be girls! So I ask more questions now and take a look.

I was just checking to see if there was an update this morning.

Cookie2 12-05-2009 08:01 AM

Nothing yet. The only lead I had was a bad lead. I felt it in my gut as soon as my husband told me this person called saying they felt pretty sure it was my dog..

I have to go out today and meet this lady that wants to surrender her dog. at 1pm. Today the weather in Port Saint Lucie is horrible! Its just all dark and pouring rain so I dont know how much I can get out there. I know I could not go out on foot like I planned and Im by myself today because hubby works until 11 pm:( . I feel now because of what's happened to me that I will want to take in any surrendered pet! I just feel that I have to do it. Maybe its a way that I can grieve peacefully. I feel my baby is out there and only until he gets sick enough will they surrender him to a hospital or the pound. That will be one way of getting him back, I'm just worried sick that at that time his health would be so far gone that it will really take another miracle to get him well.

I wanted to thank Sadie's mom salazark? She sent me the Amplified sound listening device overnight shipping and I got it this morning!!!
I saw her Sadie and I just think of Cookie soooo much when I saw that little face of hers. They have that tender super sweet face.I go to visit the shelters again on Monday. I have had to write it down on mycalendar because I dont want it to pass 4 days. I already know that they hold them for 5 days. After that either a rescue orginazation might be called or they are put down :(

I am just waiting for "the call" I'm going to redo the poster on my car.
I took a look at it yesterday and all the words are soaked from the rain and humidity...even though I self laminated it on both sides. The thing that made me smile was that his picture on that poster looks brandnew and perfect..everything else around the picture faded except his picture.

I will post later. My daughter is going to be in a Christmas parade today at 2 and I have to meet that lady at 1! Iwant to be there to see her at the parade. She even told me this morning when she left with her dad. " mom you dont have to come if you cant make it" That made me feel like crap.

Hello Gen,

You know you will never love another dog exactly the way you have loved your lost one, but you love as much in a different way, it sounds like you have the love to give, so good luck with your new addition! I dont know if you read Richards blog, he asked if I could contact your local shelter and use my experience and position to put a fire under these guys, maybe they will go an extra inch to help you! Even a little is better than nothing! I would be more than happy to try, if you have your dogs Avid chip number that is really all the info I would need! I would also need the phone number and name of the Manager of your Local Shelter(s). We usually dont have any information on Shelters in other States. I also have some connections Nationally, Im not sure what they could do, but as you know any help is good during these times! I would be glad to make a few phone calls, also when did your dog become missing?

Thanks Sandy ACOI

Don't give up!

Please don't give up. I just had an acquaintance on another forum have her dog returned to her last week after missing for 4 months! The gentlemen/woman who found her took the time to look to see if someone was missing a dog. It was one of the most heartwarming stories I have followed this year.

I just wanted to tell you all that the lady gave up the dog to me. The first thing I let her know is that I will care for him and give lots of attention but I have to see how he does with my other dogs. If I need to rehome him the only place I will consider is Dogs & Cats forever. They have a house about 5 miles from here and they have an office there. The dogs are in playpens and some crates for the cats. They are pretty thorough in interviewing people that want to adopt and will place a dog or cat according to the family.

His name is Jasper is all over my room right now! He is hyper!
But it seems that he really needs a family with one or no pets at all. He is very affectionate. I call him and he runs and puts his paws on my lap and just stays there forever as long as I pet him. Very sweet dog.
He is very well taken cared of as far as being well fed, toys .What he really needs is someone who is going to baby him and take him on lots of walks. She drove up to me at PetCo and he was in a pretty nice padded crate with his toys, had his toothbrush ,toothpaste and all his papers including his microchip info that will have to be transfered to a new owner. She hand wrote a quick letter saying she was surrendering the dog to me. I dont want to be accused of taking in a stolen or lost pet!

I want to ask around maybe here in YT for someone that is looking to add another yorkie to their family. I really want him to go to a good home.
I took him because I was afraid the owner would end up taking it to any shelter :(

This is the only pic I could take of him today.

Gen,
Maybe Sandy could help you with this too..

Can anyone PLEASE check this out? They were not helpful to me!
Please give this shelter a call. I have been checking through any FL shelter. Icalled regarding this Yorkie that they got 12/01/09 they say his name is Max. He is NOT in their adoption section so I wondered. THey say he is about 4 yrs old , neutered male.

I asked if they could scan him and if he had a collar with that name Max. The lady asked me what I needed and I told her I lost my Yorkie. She said I had to come in to see if it was him. I explained that I am about 4 hrs away from them. Then she just tells me " This cant be your dog....how would he end up here?"

I just told her that a neighbor of mine had lost her yorkie last year and she got a call from a shelter 3 hrs away! SO I told her anything is possible and I need to check this out.

She said sure let me get his records. She comes back after a couple of minutes and says "This cant be your dog, it was surrendered by its owner"

I didnt want to keep on and on but why would this dog be under Lost & Found?

Awww, he is cute. I am still keeping my fingers crossed though that your little boy will return home soon. Just an FYI, the lady that does grooming helps find homes for animals all the time. It may be something worth looking into just in case, also my mil does it all the time as well. SHe volunteers at a shelter in Okeechobee. I have had her look for Cookie at that shleter as well. It is a no kill like D&G Forever.

First of all people turn in dogs all the time that dont belong to them, so it is not impossible that the dog belongs to someone else, they can turn them in with no questiopns asked. Shelters feel that taking in unwanted animals for free, will make people less likely to dump them off somewhere. I would question that someone turned in such a valuble animal, most shelters will adopt an owner relink right away. Also shelters now have Internet so that you can veiw the animals on your computer, if the dog has a chip there is no question who it belongs to, have the shelter scan the dog, explain to them why you are asking them to do this, actually you gave me the number I will call!

Gen do the local shelters have internet pictures, I know out here we take pictures of all our strays and put them on the internet. Also find out if they scan the dogs for chips. They should have a scanner, when I get the number I will ask that they scan any yorkie, stray, owner surrender, what ever it may be if they dont already do so! It is 3 hours difference here, and its Saturday most shelters are closed on Sundays, so the sooner I get any info would expedite anything I could do! So that you dont give up hope I once returned a dog that lived in the wild for 3 years after it was lost by someone watching the dog! It was a great reunion! The dog fit in like it was never gone....

Well the lady gave me his folder with all his shots info, wellness checkups
she did give me his microchip papers also.
I will take him to the Cats & Dogs shelter so they can scan him. I want to make sure this is the same lady who surrendered him. Imagine if this is a missing pet?? I mean it's clear that they spent quite a bit of money on him ..just to give him up? She told me it was her mom's who is 70 but he is too hyper for the mom and while she was walking him one day he tripped her and she broke her ankle so she gave it to the daughter. My dogs do that sometimes , they run around my ankles while on a leash. The daughter is about 40+ and has only had him for like 3 months. Beautiful expensive crate, with bedding and cover and bag of his toys and his papers.

He is soooooooo loving. He is very playful but as soon as you sit he makes this sound like hmmmmmmm hmmmm hmmm and he wants you to pay attention to him or sit with you. He sat on my lap for an hour or so while I typed here and he was just very quiet. Also when I left I put him in his crate and he was sooo quiet and just sat on his padding in there! My dogs would be flipping out lol My bed is about 34" high and he can jump and get on!
I havent seen him act the way she said " He is way too hyper" She should see our Morkie Lucky! geeze he flips over and over while you're trying to put the wee wee pad on him

He has such a little dog bark too. Cookie has an old man type of bark where he barks two or three times then he coughs once lol.

I'm glad I went to see my daughter in the parade today. I got some fresh air. Even though the whole time I was looking at everyone there who had a dog or holding something in their arms.
