Water intake Hello! Ive been reading the forum for sometime and somehow over a few months lost my account but anyways I have 2 10 month old yorkies that are really having an issue with potty training. I walk them all the time and they get most of it outside, however, we have not gotten them nutered and they have to mark all over the place. My main question is, how often do you give them water every day. Right now we have water out all the time. my wife believes that dogs should have access to water all the time all day long. I think they should only drink water 3-4 times per day. However, I can't find anything that would lead either one of us to be correct. Personally I think that if i can control their water intake to 4-5 times per day I can know when they need to use the bathroom and take them outside. otherwise they dont need to be drinking water all the time. has anyone else had a similar experience or know of any information about how much a 4lb yorkie should drink?

| One ounce per pound per day is an average if they eat exclusively dry food. However, I agree with your wife. A dog should be allowed to drink when they get thirsty, so I would not put it down just a few times a day. At the same time, I think it is reasonable to pick it up at night because they shouldn't be eating or drinking..they should be sleeping. That said, they are going to mark whether they have water once a day or 10 times a day if they aren't neutered.

I only have girls, but when I was training them, I picked up the water each evening a few hours before bed time. I did not put it down for them again until the following morning at breakfast. Good Luck and Happy Training.

Yup, the other posters are correct. Leave the water down until about 7:30 in the evening and don't put it down again until the morning. Have you tried crate training? Or any enclosed area will work as long as they only have enough room to sleep. This will teach them to hold their urine until they are let out to go. A 10 month old yorkie should be able to hold it for a couple of hours if not more. My 6 month old has gone 5 hours without going in his crate. Hope that helps!! Good luck!

I have a 10 month old yorkie poo and I leave water in her bowl all day. She eats twice a day but water stays in her bowl all the time. She kind of know herself that she shouldn't drink the water before bed because she won't be let out till morning. She sleeps in her crate. She use to sleep with me in my bed untill she thought the whole bed was hers. So recently I decided to put her back in her own space, but when she did sleep with me she always lets me know when she has to go but then again you have males!
