| NPR-Pet Insurance I was listening to National Public Radio while driving my daughter to school this morning, and they had an interesting piece on pet insurance. Did you know that people with PI spend twice as much money on the medical costs of their pets? Interesting. I have been meaning to purchase PI for Daisy; I have spent thousands of dollars on ACL (ski injuries to the knee, in humans) surgeries for a Golden Retriever in the past. Our local pet emergency hospital moved to a brand new building a few years back......I joke that we paid for one of the walls! While I am very grateful to have such a facility close by, I don't ever want to do that again. I am overwhelmed by the number of insurance plans, and would like to make sure I go with one that is reputable. Does anyone have recent experience with a particular insurance company? Have you had to file a claim, and how did that go? Any advice would be much appreciated.

| I had VPI for a year. They took forever to reimburse, and the schedule they used was so outdated and under priced that it wasn't worth it. I now have Embrace (just renewed for year 2). I have submitted multiple claims for both my boys (poison ingestion, 2 animal attacks, illness) all were reimbursed as expected. I chose Embrace because they cover LP and genetic conditions, and offer continuing care coverage, which most others do not. Embrace does not use a schedule to reimbuse, which I love - they reimburse the cost, less your deductible and co-insurance. I disgaree that having insurance makes you spend more. The poision incident alone would have bankrupted me. It only takes one ER visit a year to make you (me) thankful for the policy. |

| Health Insurance: Now For Your Dog, Or Hedgehog : NPR This is the NPR article. I don't think in this case the spending "twice as much" is a negative thing - since it's not wasteful spending. It's chemo therapy, and LP surgery, and fixing broken legs that otherwise wouldn't be fixed. |

| I currently have pet insurance with Trupanion and I love it! When I have to file a claim, it doesnt take very long at all. For me it was a week, if I remember correctly. And what I really like about them is that I can pick out my own deductible, which doesnt change my policy at all! And they pay 90% of the bill, which I thought was amazing! I know when I was looking for insurance, I did a lot of research and on the website they have other companies policy as well! If you are seriously looking for pet insurance, you should take a look at their website: Trupanion Pet Insurance | Pet Health Insurance for your Dog or Cat Also I would totally look at: Pet Insurance Review - comparison of VPI, ASPCA, etc., they have reviews from other pet insurers and you can read about their experience with their company. I really hope you decide to get pet insurance. I think it is such a great idea and it really helps to plan for the future! |

| I will definitely purchase insurance....my #1 fear is that I would have to refuse some sort of procedure that would save my dogs life just because of $. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

I don't think it's a negative thing at all to provide your pet with the health care he/she needs.......back when I was a kid in small town Kansas, if a pet became critically ill there was no choice except to put the animal to sleep humanely. We had no access to advanced surgical centers (the vet program at KState was oh so far away), and most families simply could not afford the additional expense. If you think about it from a research angle, there are many reasons that people who have pet insurance are likely to spend twice as much on the health care of their pets. Without more information, you can't really infer cause.........
