| My scare... And stupidity... I just wanted to share my little adventure and big time SCARE!! I have been up at my sisters all this past week. Well my sister has 2 labs... Well Leia, (Princess Leia) is AWESOME with Nicky, I call her the baby sitter. She is to cute with him, but I am ALWAYS watching her like a hawk when I am up there. WELL last month this other male black lab mix dog waunders into her life. Well he is easy going for the most part. He always wants to be your pal and in your back pocket. Well last Tuesday, I was there to get the kids off the bus. I had my two out front with me as they were getting off the bus, my nice takes it apon herself to run into the house, and the two big dogs come running at us, my nephew and I. Well Nicky takes this as a time to play, and he got all hoppy and was getting his lead all tangled in the big dogs legs and what not. The kids were happy to see their pooches, so they were hyping them up. Meanwhile Nicky and Rocky are in the middle of all this... I was just about to holler at them to all calm down when I hear that high pitch cry and a bunch of yips comming from Nicky. Well that was all it took for me to hear and I was yelling at the kids and dogs to calm down one of them was hurt, then Coal, the black dog growls and bears his teeth and takes a lunge at Nicky and OMG the protective mom in me kicks in and I say in the deepest , meanest voice I could say... "COAL, BACK OFF!!" I then smacked his head as hard as I could!! He backed away with stuned look on his face... Then Leia bears her teeth at Coal and she bit him and I was smack in the middle of it, I then scream at the kids to get up on the porch this NOW!!, I then scoop up Rocky I already had Nicky in my arms. he was shaking and crying, I myself was near tears. I was then so ticked that I hollerd at coal, "GET IN THAT HOUSE THIS INSTANT I HAVE HAD IT WITH YOU!!" My nephew looked at me like he was in shock. I looked down at him and told him that it wasn't him that I was angy with. He then said, "Yea I know aunt g. Coal could have killed Nicky." I was like yes he could have... Then my nephew says... LOOK AUNT G YOUR ARM IS BLEEDING" I was like what where, and he pointed, I was like thats funny it doesn't hurt. Then my nice said, "Aunt G its Nicky's nose" I was like OMG... !! Then all these horriable thoughts were coming to me.. Like inturnal bleeding and he was going to die in my arms. I was crying at this point. But after a few moments he was fine, shaken up but doing fine. Coal was also fine with him the rest of the time too. So I am not sure what caused him to flip out... But that doesn't mean I am going to be any less causious because next time I may not be as lucky!! I love my boys to death they are my life!! My everything.. I know that may sound stupid because it is just a dog but they aren't just dogs to me, they ARE my babies. and i love them as if they were my children. Sorry for rambling on so much. Hugs, Angie

| I understand you where scared and trying to protect your baby but was hitting the other dog in the head necessary? Sometimes dogs growl and bare there teeth as a warning not necessarily as a full on attack. I just rarely think hitting a dog is right.

| Maybe it wasn't right, but after he barred he teeth he bit Nicky, I wasn't about to let him eat Nicky alive. He made Nicky bleed, Should I have just coddled him and not reacted? If he had a lead on I would have just pulled him away from Nicky. I acted in the heat of the moment... Like any other person would. When I saw that the screaming wasn't working on him I did the next best thing... Smacking him out of the way, All I was trying to do was protect the little guy.

| If I would have known that this was going to cause people to come after me for hitting a dog that was ATTACKING my dog I never would have said a peep about it... I was NOT abusing a dog, the dog was abuseing MY dog. It was done in self defence for a little dog!!! I was not hitting the dog for the fun of it... for the record I NEVER hit dogs unless the situation calles for it, and in my opinion the dog had it comming.

| Ok, sorry I took it as an attack on me, I guess I was just reacting to much for the fear of the little fella. Well at any rate after this little trama when things are excited the little guy wont be on the ground or floor till all is calm. In my defence though it was the first time ever that I hit any animal and I did feel bad after I did it, if that means anything. I also did take Coals noggin into my lap after it was all done and over with and make it up to him, and he wasnt afraid Quote:

| I find it amazing that no one here has really explained to Angie that it was not even really the lab's fault. Though I do understand why you would hit the lab. Right now I have 11 dogs, ranging from 80# to 3#. If I didn't have the Voice Of God now and then, they would never be under control. In a escalating situation you MUST break the trance like frame of mind that the dog is in. A hit is not always the best way for your own safety, but you were right in taking control of the situation. When dogs were wild they would kill the weakest of the pack. Some still do. I know many friends that have seizure dogs that can't be left out due to the fact that if the dog were to have a seizure, they would attack. When my daughters dog had his stroke, my dogs tried to attack him. What is weird is that I also have a seizure dog, and they have never messed with her when she is having a seizure. (I would consider her the leader of the pack) Anyway when your dog cried out the lab went into attack mode. Not any one's fault at all. Work on that VOG..*voice of god* If you are going to have a pack of animals, be prepared always. You did do alright. Just work on control.

| While I do not believe in hitting animals, I have to admit that I would have probably done the same thing to the lab if it was attacking my little one. You have to do what you can to save your loved ones, and if it includes a tap on the head of a lab.. then so be it! Thank you for sharing your story. I'm sorry that people felt the need to correct you. I hope you make sure to be extra cautious from now on. Make sure to be top dog and assert that YOU are alpha dog. Good job, way to save your babies!

| Yea I know I was wrong in what I did wrong by hitting Cole. I also made it sound like I slugged him when I didn't hit him that hard it was more like a tap on the jaw. I also said in one of my messages above that I do not belive in hiting animals. Had I known I was going to get lectures on this matter I never would have posted it. I guess I could have said that I TAPED Cole on the head instead of hitting him on the head, and I did go back to Coal later and make amends with him and things were fine after it all was over with.

| Ok now how many of us Yorkie lovers would not do something drastic like that if their precious baby was being attacked by a Lab?? Come on..like the previous posted had said..Greyacresmom stated...when you are in a pack you must be the pack leader. I am sure that you did not mean to harm the lab..but protect the tiny yorkie. I do not condone animal abuse however you needed to redirect the lab and fast. What you did very well may have saved your yorkies life. But like greyacres stated..you need to work on being the pack leader without striking next time. Cesar Milan's pack leader style is called for there, try it out. My dogs love each other, lick and clean each other, yet one one is hurt and crys out...the pack mentality kicks in and growling begins. If I were not the pack leader in my home someone would get hurt for sure. Good luck and hopefully your furbaby is ok. |

| No, please do not delete this thread...this is a good learning post. No one is attacking you and many, many people would have done the same thing... Greyacresmom did an excellent job of explaining how dogs will react to a situation. I had a rescue yorkie come in that had back problems and when he would go down the rest of the yorkies would jump him and I would have to pull them off. Trust me 8 yorkies attacking one that has gone done is not a pretty site and you can be bitten very easily. It is shocking when it happens and it can happen in a new york second... I think for your safety and as a learning tool it is important to divert the other dogs focus and it might have been safer for everyone if you kneeded him in the chest or shoved him over with your body. I know things went down fast but when a dog gets hit in the head then they become fear aggressive and it can escalate the problem.
