| ![]() Very scary situation - I'm glad everything ended okay. ![]() Can I give you some advice, not to be taken rudely? The KEY element when separating a dog "fight" (which this did not sound like a true dog fight, by any means) is to remain calm. That's very important. Another thing... this was not the Lab's fault by any means. You, the humans, were causing the excited energy. Also, from what I understand, Nicky (not the Lab) started the entire thing. You say he was egging it on and thinking it was play-time. One little yelp should not = freak out mode. I understand we are all protective of our babies, but Jackson will yelp sometimes while playing with little dogs his own size. Sometimes they hurt each other by accident. The Lab sounds like he felt threatened by Nicky and was defending himself. I think the important thing that should be learned from this is STAY CALM. You did a good thing but becoming powerful and telling Cole who is boss, but you can't do it angerly, and yes, you must protect your dog, I agree. Jackson was also bit on the nose by a black Lab and it began bleeding, it happened on our property with my dog on a leash and theirs roaming free. Jackson yelped for a good while and scared the crap out of me, but I tried to remain calm, I didn't hit the black lab, I didn't even raise my voice, I just quickly picked up my dog and got him into safety and took care of him. It's easier said than done but a dog fight will worsen if you have that "OHMYGOD HELPPP" attitude.

| ![]() Yes this was all a learning experance for me, one of which to never lay hands on in anger. 2 that my yelling during the situation didn't help at all. 3 that I need to be IN CONTROLE NOT LOSE CONTROLE... point 4 that I learned was, when the kids come home from school... Keep Nicky in my arms till the situation calms down... That much I now know, lol

| ![]() Just wanted to say to AngieC that I also think this has been a really good discussion topic and a learning experience for me. Years ago, when I was VERY pregnant, I stepped in front of a charging German Shephard to protect my Golden Retriever. Smart? Not really. Instinct? Yep. You just never know what you are going to do to protect the pet that you love. These postings have given me the opportunity to think about what I would do in a serious situation with my Yorkie in advance, which I hope will lead to a calm attitude on my part if anything bad ever happens. |

| ![]() It was pure instinct to protect and I would have done the same thing. Just glad that your little ones are safe. ~Joanne~

YT 500 Club Member | ![]() You reacted purely on instinct I agree. Small dogs+big dogs+excited kids is bound to = trouble. This is why I stopped taking my two to my sisers house for their Saturday play date with her 2 cocker spaniels [English]. Not because of the dogs but because her youngest daughter gets overly excited and wont sit still and constantly wants to pick the little-ones up. Doesn't listen when told not to as I think she gets a little jelous of the ayyention the dogs get- she has a low level of learning disability- so has trouble with matching actions with words. I'd rather keep my two safe at home. You need to forgive yourself for this little mistake and move on. As Ceaser says, dogs live in the moment. |

| ![]() We all do things in the heat of the moment! I was at a get-together with our doggie daycare, and this American Bulldog went after Bandit. When he had Bandit on his back other dogs got involved and I reached in to grab him out. Smart to reach my arms in growling full grown dogs with their teeth bared? No! But I knew I had to protect my Bandit. When I finally picked him up to take him away from the situation, the dog chased me (I was only walking) and kept jumping on me and growling scratching my back so bad I was bleeding. THe doggie daycare owner checked on him because he had yelped and he's not a yelper at all, and he was fine, just sore on his back leg where the dog had got him. Outside the fenced in area, the bulldog kept staring at Bandit with his teeth bared and staring at him and was totally still, and his owner was completly oblivious. Needless to say he was not allowed to come to daycare anymore! What I learned from that was that I will do stupid things to protect my dog, and I did the right thing by trying to remove him from the situation, but it wasn't the best idea. |
