Greyacresmom did an excellent job of explaining how dogs will react to a situation. I had a rescue yorkie come in that had back problems and when he would go down the rest of the yorkies would jump him and I would have to pull them off. Trust me 8 yorkies attacking one that has gone done is not a pretty site and you can be bitten very easily. It is shocking when it happens and it can happen in a new york second...
I think for your safety and as a learning tool it is important to divert the other dogs focus and it might have been safer for everyone if you kneeded him in the chest or shoved him over with your body. I know things went down fast but when a dog gets hit in the head then they become fear aggressive and it can escalate the problem.
