docking tails for yorkies illegal

My furbabies have docked tails , and I love it !! To each it's own.
Some of us like it and some don't. Buy what u like and b happy !!!

But don't tell other what they should or shouldn't like or do.....

It is legal here in the good old USA , and until it change we
all have a choice. How wonderful is that !!!!!

Amen. It's freedom of choice and not having other countries tell us what to do.....

If the (original English) Yorkshire Terrier itself were given the choice of having its tail cut off or not, I think it unlikely that it would opt for the procedure! In the same way that most of their owners would not choose for one of their fingers to be suddenly chopped off! Breeders should be addressing their tail standards now as a docking ban will surely come. As more people are competing internationally and in many non-docking countries docked dogs cannot be shown, it is likely to have a knock on effect.
The unaltered and healthily bred Yorkie is a vote catcher! I can assure some on the forum that there is a large portion of the US population wishing to see change in docking and cropping legislation. The AKC I would predict are unlikely to go further than to stipulate that both docked and undocked dogs can be shown. As most judges are the breeders little therefore would change their perception of what should be in the line up. It also moves nothing forward for those people wanting to purchase "quality" genetically sound, healthy, undocked Yorkies as pets or for show.

If that's thle logic you base things on--what our dogs would choose if given a choice--then I'm sure there are A LOT of things we choose for our dogs that they would disagree with. Thank heavens we don't leave everything up to them...otherwise mine would eat Froot Loops!

One thing I'm curious about: at this point, American yorkie breeders would not be able to show at Westminster, or any other international dog show, correct? Isn't this a problem?

Let's not forget there is no such thing as the Yorkshire Terrier Breed in nature, man created it, and man must be very careful when changing it's standard. Since Yorkies tails have been docked since the beginning, we have no way of knowing if undocked tails present a safety standard, and even in England, working dogs are allowed to have docked tails for safety. There are quite a few accounts of broken tails here and there, and I don't think the YTCA should be too quick to change the standard until more is known on safety. Certain animal rights groups will be always be against tail docking and even breeding, but I don't think this view is held by are the majority of Americans. This has been discussed many times, and I do not believe that tail docking when done by an experienced knowledgeable breeder is painful or dangerous. I do wish inexperienced breeders would stop doing it, or have it done by a vet. I am confused by the English who want us to yield to their ways, we are a pretty stubborn group, and like freedom of choice. This may change in time, but I think pushing for this change is a mistake.

For yorkies...no but did you know that a Doberman's tail is cropped for the dog's safety? Their tails are very long and skinny, it is likely to break or be injured.

Lexi came with a docked tail. I love it, and think it's adorable. As long as it is done in a humane manner, then I am not against it. With that said, if it came down to my choice, I probably wouldn't without a medical reason.

FROOT LOOPS! LOL!! This hit my funny bone! What can i say it's been a slow day! I can see it both ways...tail docking was maybe done in the early days of the breed? I know the jack russell tail was docked to provide a handy little "handle" for folks to pull jack's from fox & little critter burrows. My mom has a jack russell (Chloe) who had her tail docked way,way too short(by BYB) She has hardly got a stump! She greets me with her wagging bottom! It makes me laugh and breaks my heart at the same time! She does not know that she is "tail impaired"God bless her tailless little butt!!

I will reiterate the AKC does not control the Standard, the YTCA does. And being a member, I don't foresee it being reopened again unless mandated by a National Law.

As far as the large majority of the US Population wishing to see a change in docking and cropping legislation. Unless, there is documentation to that, I don't buy it. And the last time I checked, this is the US and we still have freedom of choice. So, you can make that choice when you purchase a puppy. You live in the UK and that choice has already been made for you.

Mine would be eating Sugar Coated Cherrios and Gerber's Chicken Finger Sticks. And instead of sharing the bed with me, they'd overtake it and I'd be sleeping on the floor.

I thought docking their tail was for their heath...because its has to stay clean down there and they can get very sick and even die for its dirty and has dingle berry. Correct me if Im wrong.

No, that's not the case. There are lots of yorkies with full tails. To keep your dog's anus clean, you should make sure to feed him a good food that he produces formed stools on, and keep the hair around that area closely trimmed.
