docking tails for yorkies illegal

My sister and brother in law docks tails on thier own.... I will take mine to the vet. They know what they are doing they done it many times but I just can not do it.....so I will have my vet to do it for me.....

Oh never mind, that's Pennsylvania, not New York, I can't seem to find the "facts" on the New York law yet, different sites are saying different things.

Here's one site that says a new Bill has been introduced, it does not say it has been made into a law yet, if it does it would go into effect in August of 2009.,

Docking dog tails may carry a fine of $500 in New York with the passage of a new bill that seeks to make the practice unlawful.

New York State Assembly Bill 7218 states that any person who cuts the bone, tissues, muscles, or tendons of the tail of any dog is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by not more than $500. The measure does not apply to dogs who have been certified as tail docked prior to Aug. 1, 2009.

As written, AB 7218 calls for making all instances of tail docking unlawful, except those deemed necessary by a duly licensed veterinarian to protect the life or health of a dog. In addition, it would make anyone who shows or exhibits a dog with a cut or altered tail subject to a misdemeanor charge, punishable by a fine of up to $500.

Proponents say the enactment of this bill would ensure that dogs are not caused unnecessary risk and pain by cosmetic tail docking. Opponents, including the American Kennel Club, say owners, in close consultation with their veterinarians — not the government — should make informed decisions about their pets' healthcare.

That is PA In NY it is illegal. They have to go to NJ to get it done.

I agree with this but it will never work. The westminster kennel club has their show in NY. So would they all be fined for docked tails? Uhhh..doubt it.

I am not sure...very little written about it and it took a while for me to even find out it did not pass...Not sure what is going on?

It was voted on and didn't pass, so it has been completely dropped.

I take the babies to the vet, they are looked over first to make sure all is well. They then use a shot to help numb them. When finished the tiny hole in the paw is covered with a fine blue webbing and the base of the tail is the same. They do cry, but only for a moment and then all is well. I get more whimpers from the first bath or first face trim.

I got Hamish in the UK when I lived there and he has his tail...and I love it.

Fergus is docked, because that is the standard.

But, I had a great dane from the UK who had his tail and uncropped ears and he was 2000% more beautiful than the mutilated babies on this side of the pond.

Eventually, the laws will change. We are one of the only FIRST WORLD countries that sill allows mutilation for the sake of "beauty".

I liken it to this: if pinky fingers fell "out of fashion" would you have your child's removed?? They aren't all that useful for anything, they often get hurt when they are playing....you can live a perfectly normal life without them (which is all the excuses dog people give for docking and cropping)? just lop them off! if you do it at birth they hardly feel a thing!

Eventually this country will decide to join the first world, though it will come slowly and with a price.

according to the akc great danes with cropped tails is disqualified , i dont know about other countries but i never new they even got tails docked, unless its for health reasons like injury,
