| So what AM I supposed to do? We are in the process of transitioning Toby from going on the pad to going outside. I know you aren't supposed to yell, spank or shove their nose in their accidents. I totally understand that. But what am I supposed to do when I find a "present" in the middle of the floor? He's doing really good with the peeing outside...it's the pooping that's driving me crazy, lol!

| I agree with above. Just don't let him out of your sight! I disagree however with letting him finish. When Jackson would start going, I'd go NO while he was doing it and he'd usually stop pooping lol and I'd take him outside and let him finish and then praise and treat!

| I agree. If you don't catch him in the act, completely ignore it. It is not his fault but yours as it means you didn't catch the cues. It's ok. This happens. But when he goes outside.. have a big party! Lots of praise and really special treats. Set him up for success as much as you can. If you can't watch him, then limit his space so he can't just go anywhere. My 13 week puppies are blocked in my kitchen when I can't keep an eye on them and they always go on their potty patch. Honestly, I am going to keep the potty patch forever as I trained Zoe (their mom) to go outside and now she won't use potty pads but when it's really cold or rainy, she hates going out and will hold it until the last possible minute. If I don't get her out right away, she winds up having an accident. Good luck. It takes patience and consistency and maybe a little bit of luck too. |

If you stop in the act you can totally throw of his digestive system. You're taking a chance of his thinking he's not suppose to go.

| Roll up a newspaper and fasten both ends with a rubber band. The very next time you find a "present", whip out that newspaper, and hit YOURSELF over the head firmly several times as you repeat "I FORGOT TO WATCH MY PUPPY". Toby has too much freedom. Use the umbilical cord method. Leash Toby to you so you can watch him 100% of the time and pick up on his signals. If you can't watch him, put him in his crate or pen. Remember, every time he has an "accident", it reinforces that he can go wherever he pleases. He won't understand what is expected of him. The key is setting him up for success so he potties where is supposed to, then rewarding him. |
