I agree. If you don't catch him in the act, completely ignore it. It is not his fault but yours as it means you didn't catch the cues. It's ok. This happens. But when he goes outside.. have a big party! Lots of praise and really special treats. Set him up for success as much as you can. If you can't watch him, then limit his space so he can't just go anywhere. My 13 week puppies are blocked in my kitchen when I can't keep an eye on them and they always go on their potty patch. Honestly, I am going to keep the potty patch forever as I trained Zoe (their mom) to go outside and now she won't use potty pads but when it's really cold or rainy, she hates going out and will hold it until the last possible minute. If I don't get her out right away, she winds up having an accident. Good luck. It takes patience and consistency and maybe a little bit of luck too.
