| how long will he cry I have an 11 week old puppy who joins a 1 year old and two 3 year old dogs. I need to confine him when no one is home. I tried the night I brought him home to put him in an x-pen (not even a crate) and he cried for 4 hours before I gave up and picked him up. He is just a delight. The breeder sent him housebroken, at 11 weeks mind you, but I don't want to worry about what he is into if I am not at home. The breeder said she had difficulty trying to confine him also. Just how long do you let him cry? He sleeps on my bed and goes all night just fine. I get up early to go to work and put them all outside and he is the first one to pee. If I don't break him now to stay in the pen am I going to be out of luck? He won't even quit if I put my one year old dog in with him. He just wants OUT. |

| The more you pick him up after he cries the more he will think he is gettting away with it and that it is ok...I had to do this with peanut when he was a pup but it worked this is what I did Put peanut in the xpen or crate...Stand there when he starts to cry tell him to "Shh" and as soon as he stops wait a second and give him a treat and tell him he is a good boy...you kind of have to repeat it a couple times until he gets it and every time do it for a longer time period.. Then when he has that down try it by leaving the room.. He will get the hint..but dont pick him up when he is crying..thats when they think they are allowed to do it!! Good luck

| Wait for him to be quiet before you let him out. Never give him attention when he is crying in there or he will never stop.

| Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try them but he doesn't have a quiet moment. He doesn't take a breath. He crys for hours. |

| Just be consistent. It took JoJo several weeks. You would have thought he was dying and he wouldn't come up for air either. I'm sure he slept when we were gone but as soon as we would drive up, you could hear him. About the time I thought he would never get any better, he stopped. We've never had another problem and he was a year old in June. Maybe he will wear down before you do. |

My furkids Donating Member | Sadie never cried..Lillie cried for about 5 nights. Sadie stayed in her crate until she was about 1 yr old. Lillie stayed in her crate until she was 2 1/2 yrs old. Both of the girls sleep with us now....

| Samson was great from day one when we brought him home, Harley on the other hand cried for hours at night, this was even with him sharing his xpen with Samson. I didn't get any sleep for the first two weeks. I thought I was going to die, I was so moody (I need my sleep). Just be consistent with him and I agree don't pick him up while he is crying. Now Harley loves his xpen for sleeping. He even goes up to it at night and stands there and cries so I will pick him up and put him in there so he can sleep. It is the funniest thing, I am watching TV and all of a sudden he'll be crying and I look over and he just wants in his pen. I put him in there and he nest with all his blankets and then sleeps for the night.
