| Long trips in the car - advice? It's almost vacation time! My parents and Oliver and I are off to Manitoba so I can FINALLY meet my 1 yr old niece. Ollie does ok in the car now, he was terrified of it but has calmed down a lot. We leave August 2nd. I am concerned about the trip as it will be 2 long days in the car. Anyone have any advice on what I can do to make this easier for Oliver? I've heard you can give a dog Gravol to calm them down and settle their stomachs on long trips - good idea, or bad? Anyone know how much I can give him if it is a good idea? I really don't want to have to pay for a vet appointment to get something but I will if I have to. I don't want him to be tortured for 2 days and then to have to turn around and do it all over again 9 days later! He is going to LOVE being there, he loves kids, and my brother has two min. pins and I think this dog loves other dogs more than he loves me, lol. The biggest obstacle will be the sleeping arrangements, as I will be on an air mattress in the basement and Ollie is now used to sleeping with me and not in his crate... I hope he'll be as good there as he is here but I'll have his crate on hand, just in case. I'm thinking he'll be so tired by 10pm that he'll pass out anywhere and won't care that we're on the floor and he can "explore" freely lol. Hopefully I can figure out some ways to make this an ok experience! He's going to have to get used to it, I drive or fly at least once a year and will continue to. Hopefully his little nerves can handle it!

| I love road trip with the dogs!! Don't feed them in the morning to avoid car sickness.feed them when you stop for the night. Dog car sit are great. My dogs love it. I stop every 4 hours to let them out pee and give them some water. For nervous dogs,Pet Eze can be a good option. |

| Thanks Chantal! I am going to google pet eze now. He's a lot better on shorter trips but I think after a few hours of being cooped up he might lose it, lol. I'm going to make sure we stop a lot for bathroom water and walk breaks. Really, I think having him there will be a good excuse to stop more for ME, haha.

| I think he'll surprise you! I love traveling by car with my dogs too! We have traveled twice to and from Alaska from Florida and the dogs all did wonderfully. Our first trip was 10 days long of drivng all day (with pottystops of course) and hotel at night. The other trip was almost 30 days as we took a longer way and stopped at many places including Disney Land. I had a basket/carseat on the console where Teddy spent his day and the bigger dogs just hung out in the back seat. The all did wonderfully. I have always found with my Yorkies that they always do better in the car when they have a spot that is all "thiers" a car seat seat/basket or whatever that is a secure place that they know is thiers and of course if it can be close to you it is that much better. Have fun!

Puppy Eaze, Puppy Be Calm, Dog Be Good and many more! You can by stuff that calms them at pet stores and Wal-Mart. It will tell you how much and how often. You have to give it to them 30 mins. before leaving. Make stops often for plenty of puppy walks and see about staying at pet friendly hotels on the way there and back.

| Oh I sooo hope he does surprise me, lol. He's a puppy mill rescue so he has some issues that pop out in uncomfortable situations! He'll also be shoved in a car with my dad who he still isn't 100% sure of, although he has been making big strides there too. We'll both be in the backseat, and I think I'm going to bring his bed and put it on the floor for him, and then the seat beside me will likely have his blanket from his crate and maybe a toy or two. The Pet Eze sounds like an awesome option, I am going to Petsmart on Friday so that we can try it prior! I cannot imagine 10 days in the car, omg.. lol. This is going to be 2, one day will be about 10 hrs and the next around 12. That's enough for me! Too much! haha. We were going to fly but I don't think he's ready for an airplane yet! Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely give him his own space right beside me so he hopefully feels safe and secure!

| So many options! LOL.. I had no idea! My other dog Freeway LOVED the car so we never had to worry about it. We do have a room booked at an Inn that is about halfway on the way there - they allow dogs and just charged an extra $10 for him - given that we had no other options that were anywhere close to half way, it was good enough for me.. lol. Sooo glad I won't have to rely on my vet to help with this, they will get enough of my $$ over the years. Quote:
