| We have a whiner/yelper....Help We just adopted a 5 month old furbutt - Shamus! He is adorable, but the breeder didn't necessarily do the things she told me she did. He cries all night if not in the same room as us. If he is in the same room as us, if I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of hte night and he cannot see me, he wakes up the entire household. Sounds like a dinosaur bird soaring through the sky hunting for prey! I had no idea these little guys could sound sound loud and high pitched. My question is what else can I do to help him feel more secure and how long will this last? My breeder said he was potty trained...and he is not...and then some. a) definately not potty trained as she said. He is trained to go on hard surfaces but not sure that counts really. b) she said he was crate trained - not even close. He pees and pooh's in his crate. Not sure what to do about it but to be consistent with his training here in our home. C) his shots were behind too. He is caught up with shots, and we are trying to be consistent with the potty training, but not sure what I can do. Suggestions? |

| First and foremost, be patient. Only scold him about potty training, when you actually catch him in the "act". Then say "NO!", and pick him up and put him where you want him to pee.....praise him profusely, even if he doesn't go....just to let him know, that is the spot that is acceptable. If is very small, he won't be able to wait long periods of time, in his crate without messing. Never put him in his crate as punishment, or he will think it is a bad place to be. Leave the door open on his crate during the day, so he can go in and out at his leisure and get used to it......put some toys, comfy pillow, etc in the so he thinks it is his safe place. Good luck! Give it some time.

| Yes, we are definately doing the right thing when it comes to potty training. It's a little unnerving, but we are starting from scratch. Shamus is about 4lbs. His mom was 8 so I anticipate a few more pounds on him in the upcoming months. We are not scolding just rewarding. I did have a nice little pillow and a stuff animal in his crate with him, but he peed on everything, and it is currently drying. I leave the door open, and randomly put a little piece of his dog food in there or a broken up treat. They don't make treats that I can find small for him, so I have been using his dog food. He has gone in and out of it several times without prompting. He hates to be in there however when I cannot watch him. Whines like crazy. He is so small that I'm afraid when he goes under the bed and the sofa. So when I am not able to have him with me or watch him, I put him in the crate for those few minutes and then come back. Sometimes I tether him to my belt loop with a leash, like when I am doing dishes and cannot watch him. I read that in a book that doing that was a good idea so he can still move around, but be in a limited area. Its the whining that really gets us in teh middle of the night or during the day if I go to the bathroom or put the kids down to nap, he is just yelping and whining. What can I do for that? |

| Remember when you bring home a new pup there should be a period of adjustment. He may have been potty trained and crate trained but he was uprooted from his mom ,siblings and all the sights and sound of his first home. Be consistent it takes time. congrats welcome to the wonderful world of yorkies

She gave me his shot records and I asked which vet she went to. I then took him to that vet, which was minutes away for a full exam. The vet said she was behind, she sold the dog to me telling me he was 4 months, and he was really 5 months. The vet recommended several shots to get caught up and advised me taht she had only brough the dogs in one time since the docking of his tail. So I am going by what the vet said and her shot record she provided. | |

| It sounds to me like you're doing a great job. Just be patient. Instead of a pillow, you might want to try using towels in the bottom of the crate. They are much easier to change and wash. |

| Yorkies just love to be with us. Mine follow me all over the house and sleep with me. When they get up I run them outside to go potty. Every twenty minutes and give command, mine is Hurry Up. Give him a treat when he has done his buisness. Dont lock him up. If you work I would put him in the kitchen with a babygate or buy an XPEN, he wont feel so confined...Good luck and post some pics of this guy.. |

| Thanks so much! Maybe tonight will be better I am not sure how to post pictures, but I'll try. I'm afraid if I don't crate him, he will get hurt in our house. So many little places for him to get into trouble. He's been here for 5 days now, so when I go into town tomorrow, I am going to look for a large gate. My kitchen is a double door frame, so a normal gate doesn't cut it. I just feel bad leaving him downstairs so far from us in the Kitchen. I figured a crate, in our bedroom was a better alternative then him being alone. I'll look for the gate though tomorrow, and chew toys. He's trying to chew on everything. OH, and to the person who sent me the note about a hand towel...I'm going to try to attach a picture. We didn't wrap him up in it, he did it himself. Very cute and a great idea - defiantely easier to clean too! |
