| OK..please don't think this is a silly question.. I am bring Bailey home around mid June and was going to set up his Xpen in my living room, I live alone and have a large 2 bedroom apt. Sooo, I was going to block off access to other rooms and just let him have free range of the LR where his Xpen is..until he is potty trained at least. I was wondering if it was okay to leave him in the pen all night by himself? Should I take his bed out of the pen and bring it into my bedroom at night so he his in the same room with me? I've been reading a lot of threads and seems a lot of people have their pups in their BR's at night..I just want to be sure. It's been so long since I raised a puppy, I am unsure about so many things, more so then I thought!

| I kept Odie in his crate for the first few months when he was a baby. Once he was older and was able to be trusted he now has full use of all the house. He never is in his crate.

| We had Lexi in her crate at night in the Bedroom. Until we could trust she wouldn't potty at night anywhere. She sleeps in bed with us now, but with the door shut, in case she jumps out of the bed! (I think I said I would never sleep with my dog!) She is 9 mos old. I think everyone has had their own experience with this. I truly believe in crate training, then moving up to the x pen, it has worked for us and she has potty trained very easily. Having the crate in our bedroom with us was a comfort for her, kept her from whining, so everybody got a good nights rest! Good luck with Bailey. (I love that name!) |

I also live in a 2 bedroom Apt. I did not use a crate or ex-pen though. JUst Pee pads , in the hall way where I discovered this was Suzi's preference of pottying. I used 4 pads and spread them out . If she did not poop on the pad, i placed the poo on the pad , it was not long until she knew where to go Poop . I did not however, allow her to sleep on bed for a few months. NOT until she was able to jump on and off the bed all by herself safely. She had her own bed in my room , and would choose anywhere she wanted to sleep . Sometimes it was a pillow, or a blanket too, she was always very close to my bed. As soon as she could jump om the bed , she has chosen to sleep on the bed . Which is delightful. Suzi waits every night for me to go to bed first, and then she jumps on the bed too. I really did not have too many potty issues with her. Even if she does miss the pad , I just clean it up> She now goes usues the bathroom outside too on walks no problems.

| That is just how Baxter is. I say time for bed, and he runs to his crate. While Zeke on the otherhand runs right for my bed lol. Zeke is older and wasn't trained like Bax. Oh well!

| The first week that we had Tuffy he slept in his crate in our bedroom. After the first week...he started crying & crying & as my husband & I had to go to work at 5 am...we decided to move the crate into the kitchen. We left the crate open & blocked off the kitchen so he had to stay in that room. He stayed in the kitchen while we were at work....& right away he started using the pee pee pads. When we were at home he was not confined to the kitchen. After a few months...he started coming upstairs to our bedroom to sleep. We had a little bed there for him...& we would put a pee pee pad down. Soon he was trained to go to the bathroom outside & he started letting us know that he wanted to come up onto our bed (My husband & I always had said we wouldn't let him sleep with us....but... guess what???) LOL. He found his way into our hearts & into our bed. (Well...actually... he had our hearts the very first day). Anyway...we moved his crate into the living room (with the door open) & now he's in & out of it. He spends more time in there now because we're usually in the living room. He has now decided that he's a big boy (he'll be 2 in August) & usually does not want to sleep with us. He sleeps in the crate or on the couch. Once in a while he graces us with his presence. LOL. I don't force him to come upstairs because he's usuall nice & cozy by the time we go up. My hubby whistles for him to come up...but I say... don't force him if he's comfy where he is. The other night...at 1am I took him with me to pick up my daughter & when we got in front of the house he slipped out of his harness & started running around. It was so dark...I couldn't see him. He ran across the street then & my daughter was able to catch him. THAT NIGHT.....I MADE HIM SLEEP IN OUR BED. LOL. I wanted to know that he was safe...right next to me. Sorry for blabbing so much. LOL. Good luck with your baby. Ro |

| Thanks you all so much for sharing your experiences with your little ones! I tend to go over to much in my head, and should really wait until my little fellow is here with me before I worry about where he should sleep..I am just afraid of leaving him alone at night in his pen, afraid he will be lonely and scared. I know if he starts crying, I will probably give in to him, and sometimes that is not a good thing Littleguysmom, I am so glad Tuffy was okay!!, that is a scary thing to go through!

| OMG - you're just like I was when I first got Sadie - worrying over every little detail - I was a nervous wreck to be getting such a tiny dog. I set my ex-pen up in my kitchen which is very large. I brought her home in August and by December she was sleeping in my bed - which I felt REALLY felt bonded us together completely. I was sooo glad to get rid of that ex-pen in my kitchen!!!!! Of course, now that she's 3 years old, she pretty much has the run of the house - BUT she still has her share of peeing "mistakes". Although she's pretty much pee pad trained, she still pees on the family room carpet when I'm at work. But this is pretty much part and parcel of owning a Yorkie - they're are definitely difficult to train - but in my opinion - definitely worth the trouble for all the love and happiness they bring to your life!! Pat
