| to board or not to board?! that is the question... ok, so the boyfriend and i are going to the Florida Keys in August [this will hopefully be a trip to celebrate our engagement, but that's another post...hah] and we are staying at a resort that does not allow pets-we are also flying, and even if we could take them, flying with the dogs make me [and the dogs] very anxious. This will be the first time we have ever traveled without the. so, taking them is just not possible, and I don't really have anyone here that can keep them-so I am truly stressed about what to do. I have looked at 2 boarding facilities/pet "resorts" that are actually very nice and not at all like your typical 'kennels', but no matter how nice, the thought of leaving them anywhere is really upsetting me. When you get a 'tour' of a facility like that, i just can't help but think that the staff are sort of putting on show-it worries me to think how they are when no one is there. I do not want to change our trip plans, but I know that I am not going to enjoy myself while gone if I am worried about my boys i hate even leaving them at the groomer for heaven's sake! so, my question is, do any of you board your dogs when you go out of town, and if so, have you had good experiences? both places i looked at also feature doggie daycare programs-if I end up having to do this, I would like to take them for a few days before just for daycare, before I am forced to leave them for a whole week! So they can at least be somewhat familiar with the staff & the place in general. do I have any other options? And if you can't take them, what do you all do when you leave town? Thanks in advance!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I don't board bc 1) I think it's just too stressful on the dogs and 2) I won't get kennel cough vaccine for my boys. I'd recommend a pet sitter - I just used one for the 1st time and paid $40 a night, which is really not bad as we probably would've paid that for the kennel. He stayed overnight with the boys and was there all evening (and if he wanted, during the day). I left instructions for all of their feeding etcetera. I think this option is way better for the doggies than kenneling - but sometimes a kennel is your only choice too.

| I have boarded mine for 2 weeks before with my groomer and they did fine. I dont know if I would like a pet resort or not. I dont like my dogs to be around other dogs unless I know there not aggressive. My vet also said they can catch alot of things when kenneled. Sometimes you have to though because you have no other options. Now my Son watches them at my house when we go away

| There are tons of good boarding facilities out there, so I don't want to lump them altogether but I just feel like some people don't take owner instructions seriously enough and they have protocol to follow which isn't always good for certain dogs. The first place I'd look is vet offices who are very respected in your area. Do any of them offer boarding? Pet sitters are great if you trust them in your house. When we need to go away a family member watches Ellie or we don't go. She just has too many issues and rules for somebody else to watch her.

| I actually work at a pet resort in the summers and I'm planning on kenneling my pup there for a week. They have many yorkies that kennel there during the summer when their parents go on vacation. They also offer the doggie day camp. At our facility, the small dogs are only with other small dogs. They are introduced slowly to daycamp and if it doesn't work out, then they don't do it. I plan on taking Chewie with me a few days a week for just camp prior to her kenneling that way she is used to all the staff and the facility. She already goes there for her grooming visits so I think it will be fine. Of course, I will be calling every day to see how she is doing! I think as long as you find a place that is comfortable, clean, and with a good reputation, then boarding is okay.

| pet sitter I have boarded Molly, but she was just so stressed out that I didn't want to do it again. I found a business card for someone who does pet sitting in her home. She had 2 other yorkies at the time, so Molly had a blast. They were kept in separate areas during the day (the other two were from the same family) so there was no chance of fighting. But during the evening it was a big yorkie love fest on the couch. She even slept with them all on the couch. It was a little nervewracking the first time, but I checked her out pretty well. Now I'm so grateful that I have a trusted person to leave her with, and it's a home environment. |

| I've had to travel and Leila has been in a kennel twice. She never got sick and I always picked er up and she looked healthy and never had any health issues after. I did reseach the place a few times, and toured the facility. A good friend of mine told me to schedule a tour of the place and about 1 or 2 weeks later to just pop in and ask to see the place again. A good place will let you tour it at all times of the day. I poked around to see if the other dogs water looked clean and fresh, I even checked the corners of the floor for dirt, dust etc. The place we used was in NY and they had supervised play area's with dogs of the same size. The kennels were huge (I was concerned she would be locked up in a small cage for days) she had plenty of space to play, sleep eat etc. You have plenty of time to do yur homework before your trip.Good Luck! |
