| ![]() Dear Pattie, Thanks so much for the encouragement. I'm still going to try to persuade her to keep the puppies with mom until at least 12 weeks, and no, apparently she plans to find homes for all the puppies at this age, not just mine. And I will take your advice also, on the crate versus playpen. I had read about the playpen idea from an owner on another website and was just thinking of the safety issue (confined but with room to move about). As far as the other dogs, I believe they would be okay with the baby; he would never be unsupervised for a moment with them. Another good thing; my daughter's schedule has changed, and she can be home more with it when I have to be at work. Thanks again for the information and support. I really appreciate it very much! |

| ![]() I just wanted to say..I think it's really nice when breeders give a care package. I plan on doing the same myself. Puppies are expensive to buy plus you have the care afterwards so it's nice for them to go home with a few goodies. I hope this doesn't offend but when I see a website where they do something like that it makes me think a little extra of that breeder. I also don't think you can ever put too much information in an info packet it may seem overwhelming to them at the time but life saving in the future. I also loved the idea of putting the website addy in there for this forum. I have learned more from this forum than I ever learned searching the web or from books. Sometimes books become confusing..here you can talk to people that put it more on our level so it's easier to understand. Not to mention the breeders on here are more for helping you than trying to stop you from breeding.

I'm not sure I understand, Wait until when??? Her other dogs are gone?? That would be a really long wait. I waited 26 years until my kids (and their dalmatians) left. If my kids didn't own them, I'd still be waiting probably another 10 years. I couldn't stand it. I waited all this time for Chloe but if I knew then what I know now, I would have gotten her way earlier. She did have to be divided in play for a bit when the rest of the family dogs visited, but now she out plays them all - The dalmatians, husky & the laso... She is always supervised but no matter what she played with or how small I would anyway right? And besides that IBluFeather has a husband, a grown daughter & herself to help give that undivided attention you spoke of and with 3 of them to 3 other dogs plus the yorkie puppy - I figure is a little better then me & my 2 birds... or when I baby sit all my daughters dogs and sometimes a cat- some weeks she forgets to pick them up for awhile. We do great... The first month will be hard getting all 4 dogs accustomed to each other but she has a head start because 3 are already used to a gathering! Now if she had a newborn, that would be another story.............

| ![]() Patti, I agree, Wait until when? I have adopted dogs and cats that other people could not take care of. I have always wanted a Yorkie. So I decided I was going to get one and I would make sure the Yorkie would fit in with the rest of the crew. Our Yorkie tormented the cat for a while but now he has given up on that. I got my Yorkie when he was 11 weeks old and I wish I had got him a little bit younger. I didn't like the lack of potty training from the breeder. |

| ![]() Rhanna, I also agreed with all the advice that you gave in I believe it was Quote #24 (or close to that number) I remember right after I first replied to this thread, I saw your advice the next day... That is exactly when I crate Chloe here as well, and my doggie playpen (opened up) works great as a kind of wall down the middle of the room for when the larger dogs and her wants to run & play BUT I can't watch every second (like when watching a movie.) I usually sit her in the middle of the room inside her crate, so the others can run around her. They only know this, therefore are happy with it and a limited break time when I stand on top of them, repeating "paws down Sasha, or Paws Off the Baby Sasha" Sometimes I feel like a recorder But here as well, but teaching Sasha to keep her huge paws down has worked in the long run (took about 2 months) Chloe's first choice of all her doggie or kitty friends or cousins, is to play with the huge husky first(that would be Sasha). Second comes in with the cats tail. She has no interest in playing with her, only to jump back and forth as the tail swishes ![]() Just recently I have had to take a 2nd doggie playpen and take the panels apart. I had to connect them to the top of the playpen with "S" hooks purchased from hardware. and now her doggie playpen has a top on it... In case you're wondering why, well Chloe decided she is smarter then the rest of us, did not want to be place in the dog playpen so she climbs out while I'm at work. Long story how I hid to find out how, why and how I lost my heart when I finally saw her do it but safety again is what I am thinking... It was not hard to attach the top and now I know she will be safe when I must leave her alone. It's never longer then 3 or 4 hours but that;s long enough to chew a light cord I think. I have to find a way to get a picture of this pen I built up scanned so I can share it with you guys. I have a hard time trying to explain things here. It's so cute now, I attached it to her doggie condo house at the end. (so that's her bedroom) outside the dog house door is her mat with bowls (although she never eats or drinks in there UNTIL after I am back home/I guess it's in there for me! Then she has her little futon couch on the corner bend of the "L" shape. Her wee wee pad is right at the very end by the door I open to let her out. Even that she doesn't use anymore. SHe prefers her wee wee pad in the back bedroom, so she waits until I get home. Sorry about running on, I was working on this playpen all week, had a thread on it, put it together right and love her little apartment...ok bye for now ![]() |

| ![]() I would love to see pics of your playpen with the top on it. My hubby was going to attach a tarp to the top of ours but not sure if that will work. Look forward to your photos. |

I can't scan and do not know how to send pictures here (or else I would have a pretty little picture of Chou next to our name ![]() I would be more then happy to mail you one if u wanted to send me your address. I have a digital camera & dock and know how to to that much! Let me know anytime ok You will think a professional made it, I am so proud but Chloe isn't!! She no longer can get out when I'm not home. Her 3rd day in it and still intact today. Also when your husband makes it, tell him depending on what shape, I did "L" shape, so the longer end of the "L" I left 2 panels attached and have it open up like a hinged on top only where I put her bowls. Instead of trying to explain it here, I can write it out and draw a diagram to explain - it'll be easier. All I know is now she is safe, I feel better and it is extremely easy to maintain and has everything she would ever need for a day inside. I even put her in there yesterday when I vacuumed because I had to do it quick and I didn't want to play vacuum tag again.

| ![]() Dear Patti and Rhanna, I understand what Kelly was saying and why. She's only concerned for what's best for the baby. We've had a family conference though, and like I said, my daughter's work schedule changed this week, so things are looking much better. I talked to the breeder this morning and tried to get her to keep the puppy longer. She says she let the last ones go at 8 weeks, she doesn't want them nursing on their mother longer than that. She placed an add about them yesterday. So I take him, or lose him. My daughter and I are going shopping this weekend to get a crate, bowls, etc. We want to be well prepared. But where do I get Nutrical? From my vet? I want to have everything necessary for such a little one to come home. If someone could give a list of the basic needed items I would really be grateful. Also, what kind of toys are good for such a little puppy? Thanks again for all the help everyone is giving me. You all are just great! Last edited by IBluFeather; 03-09-2006 at 03:18 PM. | ![]() I understand what Kelly was saying to but I guess I didn't agree. I love having Chloe and wished I did not wait, especially when you see how well they get along with others. I was most concerned for the baby regarding 8 weeks vs 13 weeks. I did not know anything about Nutrical when I got Chloe, altho I have heard it referred to a lot. When I questioned my vet, she doesn't like her patients using it, she claims they would be much better looked at and an IV if needed but that might be for the $$ who knows anymore. Someone with more Yorkie experience will have to advise you on Nutrical vs Vet visit. Basics I would think would be the crate, wee wee pads if it is still cold by you, I did buy Chloe a puppy microwave baby thinking she might sleep best by warmth when she left her Mom but she was 13 weeks but she didn't seem to need the baby for comfort, I rocked her until she fell asleep each night, (for me not for her) then gently placed her in her crate-she slept thru the night since day one. I also bought fleece, cut 2 2ftx2ft one print side/one solid side/ I then cut a one and a half inch slit every 2 inches & tied all around the edges into small receiving size blankets-she loved to snuggle with them.(still does) Her stuffed dog pig (very soft squishy stuffed dog toy) was her favorite to sleep with. Of course puppy chow and NOW they sell a special sized collars & accessaries for young tiny puppies (When Chloe came home I didn't see these and I had to use a cat collar & cat harness. If it is still cold and you will be taking him out, I would pick up an x-small sweater too. I remember how Chloe always shivered. As far as your question about toys: A thread started by ELBOW titled "Ummmmm what do they play with" in the Yorkie Talk Forum will be 6 pages full of advice and different opinions. I liked reading all the opinions and hearing different advice/that's mostly how I learned ![]() |

| ![]() I got Nutrical from my vet although he mentioned that you have to be careful as he said it isn't for all dogs. Not sure what he meant by that. I didn't need to use the Nutrical as my puppy ate like a little pig for several weeks. As long as someone is around to check on the puppy all the time. I was fortunate that I could take mine to work with me every morning. I think everything will work out well for you. |

| ![]() Great! Thanks for telling about the items, and I'll be sure to look up that thread. I'll also call my vet regarding the Nutrical. The baby is due to come home with us next weekend, March 19th. I'm really excited, also still a little nervous. (Grin) Kind of like waiting to have a child, huh? Thank goodness, I'm older and wiser now, alot less nerves! I'll try to get some pics taken as soon as I can and show off my new baby. By the way, he's already named......by my grandson, no less........BamBam! |
