| Paddy and Alfie Well here we go A story of two Yorkies Paddy (deceased) and Alfie I hope my story will inspire others to take on these feisty characters It all started in 2002, my friend Tom had been asked to rescue a dog(unknown), Tom already had a Boxer called George, who had been weaned from a puppy, Tom being a softy like me said ok, lets get him. Paddy had been found living under a car in Manchester, in a right mess, he was a miniature Yorkie, they say he may have been living rough for 6 months, he was a mess. Tom took him home where his health detiororated, In the next few months Tom spent £1300 on him, from his rough living he had an ear infection Tom and his wife nursed him back to health , Jackie had to milk his ear every couple of hours and he made it After this he had to have 9 teeth removed, as they were decayed badly Story to continue Last edited by coolbar; 04-30-2009 at 11:57 AM. | Tom drove 200 miles to get him as no one else would spend money on him After Paddy's recuperation, Tom set about walking him with George(a grand fellow and a good friend of mine) well, Paddy decided he wanted to be Alpha The comical bits are that Paddy would nudge George out of his bowl and steal his food, and generally chase George around the room so Paddy could claim territory We had a big Boxer frightened of a small Yorkie This continued for two years Several times Tom said to me, Take Paddy home with you Paddy loved me when I visited Quite a few people asked to take him home, yet Tom refused as he had saved and repaired him He said to me one day, Paddy is making Georges life hell and you are the only person who I trust, can you look after him I said , I can't Tom 6 months later after another couple of requests, I rang my wife and told her , we now own a dog Tom wanted him with me because he knew I could afford the vets fees, he didn't trust no one else, as Paddy was fragile We picked Paddy up and fell in Love straight away more to come |

Paddy was now at home with us, He settled in quick as he had no pressure from George I hasten to add that George was glad to see the back of him (more of that later) For a year or so Paddy mulled around contented in my house Then he started yelping when eating, I inspected his teeth and found some more decay A visit to the vet, found that he had more bad teeth, this time he had 13 removed I said to the vet, he has none left He replied, don't worry, although he has lost his front teeth, he still has his left canines and his back teeth I was concerned, but Paddy made good use of his remaining teeth, confirming that the vet was correct in saying he could still eat ok Paddy was still as good at a bone after

That session with his teeth cost me more money that I will admit to paying, but Paddy was fighting fit again. He was such a Grand little Man that I would have given my life for him We had some good times me and my little mate Some time later, he was yelping when eating again, I was worried, he wouldn't let me open his mouth for inspection. So another vet visit, turned out he had a tick on his lower lip, vet removed it and paddy was fighting fit again Vet already knew him and called him the Yorkie who thinks he is a Rottweiller and didn't charge me

We booked a holiday to Portugal and Tom agreed to look after Paddy, after all he was Tom's pal also. When we got back, George was sulking in the corner, Paddy had taken over again, my mate George came to me all sheepish as if to say, why did you bring him here. So back to normal for George and we took Paddy home

Paddy had blooshot eyes and was having trouble breathing. He was now about 12 years old. An xray revealed he had an enlarged heart and Liver, his heart was pressing his trachea against his spine. He spent two days in the vets and was glad to come home. Vet wanted to put him to sleep, I refused. The last two years of his life was on medication Finally at age 14, he went lasergic with bloodshot eyes again, he died in my arms on the way to the vet, but not before licking me on the nose, he knew I was with him. Later that night my son in law helped me bury him. Boy oh boy, did I cry Next chapter coming, 3 months of grieving and take on another rescue next story soon folks

Zoe, He was a real character My little mate Paddy was better than all my real friends. Although I only had him for four years it was like a lifetime, we became so close and also Tom was his sidekick, Tom was as gutted as me when he passed away. We buried him in the field behind where we live, it is like a pasture and I planted some snow drops on his last resting place, a couple of years on now and the snow drops are dividing, they are in a large shape with the letter P. He is not forgotten, but to make his passing more special his favourite blanket was one that I stole from a flight on concorde, it has silk edges, he loved it, so it was his burial shroud, a special blanket for a special man. I still have two of these blankets, but Paddy claimed one, so only fitting that he was laid to rest with it. I am sure British Airways wouldn't mind, sshhhh!

After Paddy left us life was a little empty. We were still grieving for Paddy for a long time. As a substitute, my neighbour was breeding Zebra Finches, so we bought a large cage and Trevor gave us five Zebra Finches. Within two weeks we were down to two, methinks this is not a good idea, although nearly four years on the two are still with us, we talk most mornings, something like beep beep, they know me and do talk in their own way. But talking to a bird that only goes beep beep is not enough.
