| Penny is afraid of the rain! And not outside, she doesn't like the noise it is making inside. The rain is just starting, with a little thunder in the background. It has been at least half and hour and she hasn't settled down yet. I've never seen a 5 month old puppy afraid of a rain storm! Goofy little girl. She is the bravest most playful dog I've ever had till tonight She is sitting on my lap and keep jumping at every little noise. I hope she isn't one of those dogs that get crazy when they hear thunder or fireworks go off. I'm not responding in anyway to her behavior, I won't give her reason to fear the storm, do they get this fear naturally? |

YT 2000 Club Member | Poor baby...........mine aren't scared of the thunder, but hate to go potty in the rain. I am thankful that the roof over our patio is bigger than the slab b/c that way they can still go out and do their business and not get wet. Neither one of them will go out in the rain so this has worked out nice. I hope Penny gets better with the storms.

| Triss hates the rain, and will do anything to not go out there and potty, lol. She holds it as long as she can.

| SophieKate hates the rain and thunder also (but loves the puddles). In Georgia during the spring we have a problem, lots of puppy nerves, barking at thunder and refusing to go outside. I am now starting to pad train her for when it is raining. We are still going out to the garage (same route we take when we go outside to potty). I open the garage door and than take her over the pad - she is kind of getting it so far.

| Here's something I did with Sadie Mae. When a storm started, every time it thundered I'd jump up clapping my hands, laughing and dancing around acting very happy and I'd give her several treats. She'd jump up with me and start running around barking - initially because she was afraid, but after a few times of getting treats the barking changed from fear to excitement. Soon she wasn't so afraid of the sounds, and I could just clap my hands, laugh and give her a treat. It worked for her, she wasn't nervous any more. But be forewarned, if the storms come in at 2 in the morning they will be waking you up looking for the treat. With Annie, the treat thing didn't work so good because she simply was too nervous to eat them. If it was at night I'd turn on a light and the tv and lay back down and tell her in a very calm, firm voice, "Annie you will be ok. Momma is not going to let anything happen to you. Lay down." I wouldn't pet her or cuddle her, but let her sit on me until it passed. She went from being hysterical when I first got her to just nervous in a few years.

| My boys are oblivious to thunderstorms... they have NO idea and don't care at all. Some dogs shake and panic and pant. Someone one time said their dog hides behind the toilet in the bathroom and shakes uncontrollably! sooo sad We had an outdoor dog growing up that hid under the car when it thundered out. She never wanted to come in, she was a samoyed who found the house too hot! If we could coax her out we would put her on the porch at least and she would shake under the table. soooo sad!

| It's strange you post this when you did. Last night we had a heavy rain storm along with some lightning and those long rumbling thunders. My 11 month old male was visibly upset with those sounds. We have had them before but for some reason they really bothered him yesterday. He was jittery all night... pacing around at every sound like cars, planes overhead... etc. Seems calm today, however. | Mine is really bad during thunderstorms! He starts shaking and pacing. When 4th of July rolls around it's hard to even calm him down! I'm afraid he's going to have a heart attack sometimes. I usually turn up the t.v. as loud as I can (without hurting his ears) and try to get him to play, but he's usually not interested. I don't know what to do either.

| Luigi too Luigi doesn't like thunder and lightning. He starts running in circles and barking, the two times he has seen and heard it. So funny. |

I LUV how you handled the storms! I will be sure to try that. Roxy just experienced her first storm Sat night. Had some good thunder. She barked & was very scared, stayed real close to DH who was sleeping. I entered the room to see how she was doing. She ran real fast & jumped into my lap & just sit there really still. Her ears were perked up & eyes popping out. Not sure what to do next I did like you did with Annie. I so don't want her to be scared everytime we have a storm. I'm a storm watcher & not afraid of them at all. Sometimes I think I should be more than I am. Thanks for the tips. It would be worth getting up to give her a treat! | |

| Layla used to be fine with thunderstorms- but not anymore- we had a doosy of a storm last night- but she was in her crate (it was bedtime) and was fine. Usually just the thunder bothers her but if the rain is intense on the windows (we have a sky light which does not help at all) that will upset her too- I usually put her in her crate where she feels very safe - i also cover the crate with a blanket to give her more of a den like feeling. I've read that dogs like to be in the bathtub during storms but i forget why.... |
