| I have a question about matting! I usually don't have any problems. We do our own grooming here weekly and have never had an issue with keeping up with mats. BUT we just got Felicity, our baby girl. Since then, my older two are constantly matted, and I'm pretty sure it's from wrestling with the puppy. Do I have to put my little boy in a puppy cut to let him play with the new girl? I refuse to cut Phoebe's hair that way...did it once last summer and hated it...she's just not the same without her beautiful hair! So I will have to control the playing between her and baby (which she gets annoyed with the baby after awhile anyway). But Phoenix will wrestle and wrestle till the baby gets tired. He's only 8 months old, and doesn't have long hair yet. Does anyone else have this issue with puppies? Also, Felicity's hair is matting, which is a surprise to me... Her parents both have silky blue and gold coats...but of course at 12 weeks she is still black and puppy coated. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I hate torturing them trying to get those mats out daily! thanks! deb |

| If the matts are bad I use a dematting comb. I dont know about the matting while wrestling mine dont do that. I guess if it were really bad I would opt for a puppy cut

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Phoenix is still a puppy at 8 months and of course Felicity is a young puppy. They do have puppy mats and some will continue to have them until closer to a year old. Your problem may be a combination of puppy mats, and them playing. You may just have to be diligent about combing out everyday if you want to keep them in full coat. I have a dematting comb (comb with the teeth that move) and that does help with matting, also I use cornstarch to help remove the mats. They are both adorable babies!

| I got the same problem... Since I got Astra, my other dogs are a mess! She is not 10 months and still no progress. Little devil love to wrestle and also climb on the other dogs in a dominant way. My 2 other girls need way more grooming to stay nice now. And I have finally shave down Tom Pouce ,a schnauzer cut like my other male Teddy. Hope she'll come down as she age! So sorry I got no advices for you... Just get ready for A LOT of brushing!! |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I just checked Petedge and the comb is not called a dematting comb - they are referring to it as a flea comb. My comb says "Untangler Comb". I found one on ebay and included a link for it too. PetEdge: Flea Rid Delicate Touch Combs Untangler 5 inch Stainless Steel Pet Comb - eBay (item 200314402195 end time Mar-27-09 18:38:15 PDT) I sprinkle a small amount of the cornstarch on the mat and work it out with my fingers as best as I can - then comb it out. The cornstarch is slippery and the mats come out very easily.

| Thanks everyone! You know, I use Coathandler shampoo and conditioner and I dilute some of the conditioner and leave in for blowdrying. I bathed Felicity yesterday and all her mats came out with blowdrying. Then I worked on Phoenix, but had to cut out several mats. I'm going to try the cornstarch thing and find an untangler comb. Thanks for the links. I think I will shave Phoenix and then grow his hair back out for the fall. By then, hopefully Felicity will be a little calmer! Have a great weekend, everyone! deb |
