'too big!' 'too small!' dumb people?

What does bother me are times when I walk by GROWN MEN. This only happens with that particular species. Okay, this was another bus stop incident. A very bored late 40's looking smoker standing at the back part of the glass covered bus stop area sees us coming up the street. I can already see him eyeing my girl. He gets into position. Puffs a few more puffs of his cigarette. And as we approach and walk by with commercial buildings in the way, preventing us from avoiding the guy, he bent down near dog level, holding his cigarette off to the side (to avoid burning his clothes and/or ours, I bet, not so much to show some consideration) then proceeded to go, "Arf, arf, arf. Arf! Arf! Arf!" He KEPT doing that. LOL. And I said clearly to hubby, and hope he heard as he kept GOING even after we passed and gave him an "Are you stupid?! Wacko!" look. I said, "Why would people do that? Do they realize how dumb they come off looking??" I was proud that my girl walked RIGHT BY without once breaking pace. Little did he know, at that time, she would have responded more to, "BARK BARK BARK, BARK BARK BARK" and he'd have to do it with a deeper tone. She thinks "No bark!" = "Look! Doggy friend!" And when you do consective low pitched "Bark Bark Bark"s, she'd come up to you and give the yorkie head tilt. LOL. But we've overused that, so she has since refused to give us the satisfaction of a response.

Well, we weren't so lucky when we were crossing the road one time and there was a skateboarder crossing without getting off of it. She went hysterical on him especially when he bent down as he was boarding by going "bark bark bark! bark bark bark!" He's such a mean little delinquent. I've purchased a mini skateboard but have yet to make use of it because of the weather. I have been meaning to desensitize her from the noise it makes. So it's just sitting around for her to look at for the time being.

This kinda bums me out. The "other" people lol. Why do they seem to be obsessed over how big someone else's dog is???

It shouldn't matter, as long as they are loved. Hmmmph.

that is really what i am trying to find out.

my theory is that a lot of breeders advertise tiny yorkies and sell them at a higher price, so there is a misunderstanding of what the 'proper' size is for a yorkie. and people are mislead to believe that 'smaller' yorkies are 'worth more' because a lot of breeders charge 'more' for smaller sized yorkies.

what you think about my theory?

I think the ONLY worry should be is their health. Not how big or little they are. I know smaller ones tend to be sickly, but if they ARE healthy, why should the size matter? It is the heart inside that matters most. IMO.

Im sure this is different if you are showing & breeding. But to the general public (and usually pretty uninformed) it just shouldnt matter.

i agree that health is most important. but what i am saying about people in general is that they ARE ill-informed and perhaps mislead. they have no idea that small size could be a possible indication of poor health.

i am sure if people were more aware, then they would not make all the 'size' comments.

I know exactly what you mean! I've had some people be so mean to me when they see Silvia in person. Her pictures don't really accentuate how very small she is, and seeing her in person shocks some people. I didn't plan to adopt such a tiny little thing, but it worked out that way. I've even been told I'm irresponsible for owning her! Like I've starved her or something to make her as small as she is! (ironically, my vet tells me she's fat, cause she has a belly)

Speaking of ignorance, on another note, I've also been accused of using peroxide to "bleach" Silvia's hair, because "there is no way a yorkie is naturally that color!" Don't you just love stupidity?!

I love the name Silvia and she is so cute. How tiny is she? I cna't believe someone accused you of bleaching her!!! I think she would be bald if you tried it!!!

I won't be offended by the general public and their remarks because you guys are right. They are just ignorant and just honestly don't know.

I am offended, however, by other yorkie owners that are just downright rude. Ginger is all Yorkie, weighed 3 pounds, 12 ounces at 12 weeks. A lady carrying a very small Yorkie at Petsmart told me Ginger couldn't be full blooded at her weight. She's too big. Geez... she is only 3 pounds. It all in the way it's said, I guess. I'm not naive. Ginger will be on the larger side of the scale but that doesn't mean she not all Yorkie!

Yorkies come in all sizes and they all deserve LOVE! That's the bottom line. If someone has to comment can't it be on the postive side?!

That's just unbelievable ridiculous. Jackson is a big boy at about 10 pounds and I still find HIM to be small.

I've actually made this mistake too before..... at the ball park, I was walking around with Tatum (she was about 2 years old and 4-ish pounds) and I saw someone with what looked like a Yorkie but was pretty big - I'm thinking probably well over 10 pounds and quite tall - so I asked her what kind of dog he was. She kinda snorted at me and said a Yorkie. I didn't want to be rude so I just said "cute Yorkie" and walked off. I've learned a lot since then on this board.

I had that happen to us one time too. The lady was telling me that Tatum was much bigger than her's - at the time Tatum was around 4-5 lbs (about 2 years old) and this puppy she was holding was 12 weeks old. Um, sure, of course mine is bigger than yours. I wanted to ask her if she really believed that her's was finished growing. Sheesh....
