I think these are my favorite responses... of course you could just smile and say "why are you asking?" That would put them on the spot, and if they were really interested you could decide to share the info or not.

oh yeah, and when I had my yorkie she WAS a rescue, ppl told me I was lucky and prolly saved thousands of dollars... then I would tell them about the vet costs for a dog with mange, tapeworms, and surgery for LP

yea, i had a couple approach me in petsmart one day and we talked and talked, they were so curious about everything because they wanted to get one too so i had no problem saying how much she cost(they asked nicely too,they started wit "if you dont mind me asking...")
on the other hand when I was in Best Buy I had an employee none the less ask me several times how much she was, I refused to answer saying " She was my Christmas present from my mom" which is true (my ONLY present lol) and she then said no really how much was she?? I said I do not feel comfortable answering that and proceeded to tell her if she asked one more time I would speak to her manager...

I'm always happy to tell somebody "I just made a donation to the rescue."

People always assume these are expensive little dogs-- I feel like I'm doing the world a service when I advertise the fact that I got my cute little dog from somewhere other than a pet shop!

I've always found that question to be rude as well.. And its amazing at how many people ask that... Sometimes its the first thing they ask

None the less, I always tell them "enough" or simply say "she was a gift from my husband" and leave it at that

I actually don't mind being asked at all. I take that as an opportunity to educate a lot of them since they automatically assume my dogs are teacups because of the price I paid for. I then take the time to talk to them about it. Just make sure whatever you pay you have to be responsible for their life. It's a lifelong commitment and the unconditional love as we all know is priceless.

It seems to me, the question should always be taken as a compliment. No one ever asks how much something is, unless they think it's wonderful.

I don't like it when they ask me how much I paid as the 1st question, I ignore them. If they start the conversation by asking what their names are, what kind of dog they have, ect...then I don't mind. They seem to actually be interested in the breed & also want to know where I got them...& I'll be happy to share what little knowledge I have.

There are some people I really don't like to discuss this with. If it's someone who is truely interested then I'll just give them a range from low to high on what they can expect to pay. With the ones that are just being nosey and judging me then whatever first comes to my mind is what I say (usually not much information and I'm pretty quick to change the subject).

I know if you tell them how much you paid some people, look at you like girl you are crazy, or make some rude comments
