If someone seems really interested in maybe getting their own, then I wouldn't mind at all telling them how much they cost. But strangers .... I don't owe them any personal information and I would be wary about potential theft or just someone looking to make a wise remark.

My family all know how much they cost, but they are all dog lovers too and realize the purchase price is really just the beginning, and even the total of all we spend on them, spread over the life of the dog, is amazingly cheap for the loving return we get every day!
yea, i had a couple approach me in petsmart one day and we talked and talked, they were so curious about everything because they wanted to get one too so i had no problem saying how much she cost(they asked nicely too, they started wit "if you dont mind me asking...")
on the other hand when I was in Best Buy I had an employee none the less ask me several times how much she was, I refused to answer saying " She was my Christmas present from my mom" which is true (my ONLY present lol) and she then said no really how much was she?? I said I do not feel comfortable answering that and proceeded to tell her if she asked one more time I would speak to her manager...
