| "FREE Yorkie" ad in my area... Hmmm.... Hello all. I was just looking on Kijiji (an internet classified site) and there was an ad put up today for a free 10 week old female Yorkie(registered w/AKC). I have only looked on there once before so I don't know if I would spot a scam if I saw one. It says she is sweet and has a nice coat and she has had her first round of shots. There is not a ton of info but there is a picture of her. I am telling myself that if things seem to good to be true, then they probably are but curiosity has still got the best of me. I need some input as to why this would be a terrible idea to look into. I am getting my taxes back very soon and had already thought about adding another Yorkie to my brood as a little present to myself...( except I had planned on paying for one!) I just want to hear what some of you guys would think if you came across the same classified ad. I know it sounds really weird but I can't quite put my finger on why I think that. I have never been scammed so maybe I am a little nieve. I can give you guys the link:AKC Brown Yorkshire Terrier (10 weeks old) - Detroit Dogs & Puppies For Sale - Kijiji Detroit, Michigan |

| If this seller is actually in your area, try asking if you can come see the puppy. If they say no, you'll know for sure it's a scam.

| Your probably right, but how could they scam me? I mean, what could they scam out of me? I just don't think like that so it's hard to understand what it is they are scamming on.... |

| I sent a "response" to the ad and asked some questions. If I get a response I'll let you know if I think it is a scam or not. (I gave away an AKC Pekingese once, so it IS possible this is legit...but not very likely.)

| If it's right in your area then I would look into it. You never know, maybe this person bought the puppy and can't keep it anymore.

| Could be anything. That surely is not the picture of the puppy. The dog could have health problems. You really have to ask yourself. Why? There has to be a reason they are giving it away and not selling such a beauty. Somethings up just don't know what it is, but I wouldn't want to find out. Smells bad, real bad!!

They just have to know you are interested and soft-hearted enough to part with some cash for some poor little puppy.

| Well, I am smart enough to NOT give up any money, I am actually really good at sensing people when I am face to face with them but the internet is harder for me to see through these things. (and I have never found a dog over the net) Detroit is a crazy place, for sure. SweetViolet, if you hear anything, I would love to hear back from you. (Are you near the Congo in Africa? I am doing a report on the problems that the Congo is having with their Political system and the rebels etc.... Just thought I would ask.) |

| Isn't it funny how we "meet" people from so many different areas here on YT?? I mean, really, what are the chances that you could actually talk to someone regarding this report you're doing?? I think that's neat.

| I almost fell for that one too the scam is not up front, that's the trick! It's after you're in love. They will say that you need to send them some money for the crate (after they are sure you're a good mark), ticket or whatever. The puppy got sick and needs vet care, but they don't have the cash right now. Or, the owner (a missionary) was transferred to Africa and can't care for the puppy and you need to send some money for transportation, etc. The one that I responded to had dozens of these ads in Kijili and I can't remember which other places. The real owner of the stolen pictures caught on and quickly warned people about it. Good thing, because I almost fell for it. They can tell you some sad story that will make you open your wallet and since I thought that someone would beat me to the pup, I should act quickly. I did some research and found out that this scam has been going on for a good 10 years. Be suspicious. Google "Yorkie adoption scams', you're sure to find people talking about how they got scammed. |

The ad was posted in her area, so it would be pretty easy to find out if they were legit or not. Like another poster said, ask if you can come see the pup.

| That scam has been on the internet for at least a year. They get you to send money for the crate and the flight, then you never hear from them again. Never, never buy on line. I always stress to go see the puppy, check out how they live, make sure the owner has a Vet. check proof, call the Vet. if you want, but do your homework before ever investing in a lifetime obligation and a healthy companion.
