| Scooter's Excellent Adventure I was on the lanai yesterday when I heard a sound that wasn't quite right, so I looked around and there is Scooter doing battle with a very large black snake that had somehow gotten into the lanai. Scoot was darting and weaving and so was the snake, but the snake was also hissing and making a very weird sound almost like a rattle. I yelled at Scoot to come and he ran right over to me (they were on the other side of the pool). Scoot was very, very interested in his new toy and wanted to go back but killjoy mommie made him go into the house. I persuaded Mr. Snake to leave our lanai and was he mad. He is a good 3 feet long, very pretty, and he and I have come face to face a number of times while I've been doing stuff in the yard. I do worry about the dogs being bitten by black snakes because although they aren't poisonous they do have tons of bacteria in their mouths which can cause a bad infection. Scooter is so small that a bite would probably make him very sick. He did enjoy his encounter though....thought mommie had bought him a new toy.

| I'm thinking you went from Hero to Zero pretty fast in Scooter's eyes. I could just hear him... "WOW MOM!! Thanks for the great new interactive toy. I love it!! I bob, it bobs. I weave, it weaves. It's squeaker must be broke, because all it does is make a hissing sound. But I love it anyway. Your the bestest Mom in the whole wide....hey! Put me down. No, no, not in the house. What are ya doing with the broom. MOM STOP! Don't throw out my new toy! Awww shucks Mom, I wasn't done playing with it, but I still loves ya Mom."

| I would have freaked out if Piper encountered any snake never mind a 3 FOOT snake. I doubt if Piper would have come when she was called she is 9 months and that isn't her strong point. That would have meant I would had to come between Piper and the snake. AAAAAAAAAHHHHH! I have to admire you the way you stayed so calm.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | O.K.- I am not afraid of snakes if they don't come after me, but I would've had a heart attack if one was hissing & weaving at Jaxon! You were lucky Scooter came to you-knowing wild man & defender of the yard-Jaxon-I would've had to pull him away from the snake. LOL!!!!

| Here in Arizona they have "rattlesnake training" to teach dogs to stay away from snakes. They de-fang a live rattlesnake, but it can still make the rattling noise with its tail. They put the dog in a room with the snake. When the dog gets too close to the snake, I believe they give the dog a buzz with a shock collar. I haven't done this training with my dogs, because my entire yard is walled in, so no snakes can get in. But I understand it can save lives. |

| That's the kind of thing that scares me Lots of dogs get into lots of trouble biting or getting bit by wildlife we find in our backyards Snakes are self-explanatory I had a pt in my office a few years back he was missing a few fingers on his right hand .... he was a landscaper and I thought he was going to tell me he had a lawn mower accident or some other mechanical accident but he said he was clearing brush when a snake bit him on his hand by the time he reached the ER His hand was gangrenous Many snakes have toxins that constrict blood vessels and this will kill a small dog like a yorkie Small rodents carry rabies and leptosprosis here in FL there are toads that are poisonous so it is very important to keep and eye on these little guys because if there is something out there... they're going to find it
