Didn't crate Samson today Since I got Samson (in October) I have crated him when I am at work. Today I decided to let him stay in the house. I closed all doors to bedrooms/bathrooms and put his xpen with his potty paper like I usually do but left the pen open on one side. He is 7 months old today. He goes on the paper when he's in the crate/pen so it looks the same except for the opening. He goes to the door and barks to go out when I am home so that was a concern...would he do that and if no one came, would he potty on the door mat? So that's when I decided to set up his crate/pen like usually but so that he can get out too. I hope I made the right decision . My husband does not know that I let him out today. Wish me luck! I will update you when I get home from work today. Do any of your dogs "run the house" when you are not home?

Awwwwwwwwww, BEST OF LUCK with your little Darlin today !!! I am sure he will be FINE. Our 2 little ones have the run of the house when we are away and for the most part all is well upon our return. LOL Our little guy (nearly 7 months old) will find something to get into from time to time but overall they behave VERY WELL when left alone.

Thanks so much for the encourgement! It makes me feel better about leaving him out. I do feel bad leaving him. He is in his crate/xpen for about 7 1/2 hours while I am at work and I can't go home for lunch. So let's keep our fingers crossed that he has a good day!

Hello - I don't crate my Oscar any more and quit doing so after I felt pretty confident with his house training, which could have been around Samson's age - 7 or 8 months...My dog is pad trained so if your dog is pad trained he may be OK in the house.. however, sometimes Oscar gets in to things he shouldn't - he found a Christmas stocking and ripped it up - what a mess but he doesn't do that kind of stuff everyday.... Good luck...

Well, I had never crated mine, did have xpens. Didn't work, but, would go out and mow the yard, and came in one time on a quick break, and my leather sectional was kind of destroyed. You also have to remember, they can chew cords, etc. Hubby did cover all the outlets, cords, etc awhile back where my almost 8 mos old baby couldn't get to them. I don't put her up anymore, but, it's because she can't hurt anymore of the furniture out here(it's already destroyed) and she's pee pad trained, and they're gated off from the rest of the house(other than the kitchen and laundry room). The only thing she could ruin now would be my molding, which I hope and pray she doesn't, and realize if she does it's my fault. Please remember, if your little guy destroys anything, don't blame him, blame yourself. Good luck

What kind of "chew" bones do you all recommend? Should I leave it for him when I am not there? I was giving him one by Pedigree that was completely digestible. When he gets it down to the "nub" I throw it away. I have given him rawhide but am so scared he is going to choke. Any suggestions on how to keep him "occupied" when he's home alone?

| Fiona is still crated when I'm not home, she is only 11 months old though. I didn't crate my dachshund and did the same thing as you did, and when I got home, she chewed the moldings all over the laundry room, needless to say, my step mom wasn't too fond of me that day!

I don't like rawhide because of the choking/obstruction hazard they pose, especially to little dogs....why not try bully sticks? They are completely digestible and usually last quite awhile. Alyssa ("AMD") sells them on her website, westbrookdog.com. I have tried the ones from Petco, but they really stink...the ones Alyssa (and other YT vendors) sells don't smell too bad. (And FORGET the Walmart kind....they are horrid smelling!) Other than that, just some safe chew toys. I don't give Bella anything edible to chew on because 1) we think she has liver problems so I have to restrict the kinds of protein she gets, and 2) whenever she was little and would chew them, I just couldn't stand the bully's and with the other edible chews her saliva would mix with them and would cake up her paws! Eww! Soooo, I leave her the flexible Nylabones, and she loves them! The dental Nylabones (the ones with the little blue spiny, rubbery nubs) she would chew up to quickly and then the blue bits would start coming off, so I stopped getting those since they aren't meant to be swallowed! Also, I think the hard nylabones are just too hard for her teeth! Anyway.....hope that helps!

| Well, it really depends I think on the personality of your dog. My boy, Pao has a free run of our apartment when he was just a few months old. He never chews anything else besides his bullysticks. He just doesn't like to chew. Now that we are in a house, he has a free run upstairs. The only reason why I left him upstairs instead of the main floor is because there is a window low enough for him to look out and he loves to look outside when we are not at home.

My Rocky wouldn't stay in the bigger crate we got him for during the day and so we let him have the run of the hall and kitchen from about 4 months old and no accidents...... the last month (he's 7 months old) I have started letting him have the run of the stairs too but all the doors shut, as she can see out of one of the upstair hall windows.... no accidents, dh isn't confident but so far so good!

Never have crated. Even when the babies were small. I think that the sooner they learn about their world, the sooner they will know how to treat it and what is expected of them. Plus if there are siblings at home, they learn from them as well.( I just know that if I was stuck in a crate for 8-9 hours I'd be going bonkers )

Samson has never chewed on anything except his bone too. And an occasional stick from the yard!! He has french doors to look out into the backyard. I am getting off in 5 minutes so I'll let ya'll know how he did later today or tomorrow morning. My boys have basketball practice tonight so don't know if I'll be on later or not.

I remember the day I left Buddy FREE. I couldn't wait for the day to be over! He didn't have an accident but he did eat some of the corner's off my throw rugs. Next day more corner plus a rung on my dinning room chair. Next day more chewing rugs plus the bathroom rug. Etc, etc. It finally stopped the day he chewed the skirt on my love seat. That day was almost the end of Buddy. After that I must have scared him so much with my "mental fit" he never chewed anything else. That was 4 1/2 yrs ago. I choose to allow this to happen I know but I felt it was like raising a child. If you remove one thing then before you know it everything you own is locked up somewhere. My kids never touched anything and I was determined that Buddy wouldn't either. It took 13 throw rugs, 1 rung on the dinning room chair, the bottom chewed out of my blue velvet LR chair which he claimed as his, a throw pillow, corner of my kitchen floor border and started chewing the front door as well to get out. When he chewed my love seat that was it! I think I got my message across when I scared the living poop out of him. It worked because he never chewed another thing after that. I wish you luck. Open the door slowly tonight. Finger's crossed he was a good boy.
