| I live in Southeast Florida. We have these ugly poisonous frogs that can kill dogs. My husband as a child lost his dog that way. They are nocturnal. They love to live in our garage. If your dog bites one, it will foam at the mouth. Take a hose and put it on the side of the dog's mouth, holding the dog face down and rinse the dogs mouth out with water. Make sure the dog is looking down and you rinse from the side so that you don't drown him. Death can happen fast so you do this before calling the vet. When threatened the Giant Bufo (Cane) TOAD secretes a highly toxic milky substance, called bufotenin, from the parotoid glands. It is classed as a hallucinogen, but it is not particularlly healthy to humans: it will burn the eyes and may inflame the skin. The poison may also inflame the mouth and throat and may cause nausea. Dogs or cats that bite the Giant TOAD will sicken and may even die. My husband was cleaning out the garage and trying to rid it of all the toads. They poop all over. He scoops them out but they come right back. He doesn't like to kill things but we don't want them in the garage. He is really a big strong man. He hit the taod with the shovel really hard and it wouldn't die! It started jumping towards him. He started screaming. He had to hit it a few times hard before it would die. The next day he was in the garage and he looked and it looked like the same toad kind of messed up looking right at him and it was jumping towards him. Again he screamed. He said it was like a horror movie. He hit it with the shovel and this time threw it into the lake outback. I HATE these toads! They scare me. This is a picture of my husband and I, a bufo toad, and the frogs from Vilettes yard!

I was TOTALLY Shook up that day ...I can STILL feel that limp clammy thing in my hands - I thought it was a LEAF Now...if we had those Bufo-BARF-O Poisenous Toads in Texas I would be out there at night with a shotgun. The first time Chanel touched one she drooled all over her chin - I called the ER Vet and was in a panic and they said as far as they know in Houston - the toads here only taste very bitter but will not kill our dogs..... but you can BET I read all about toads on the net that night - that's how I found out about the Killer Frogs in Florida - Giant Bufo (Cane) TOADS can grow up to HUGE sizes ! sunshine22...Your hubby is BRAVE to be whacking those ugly things and taking them out - they're straight out of a Monster Movie. | |

| Geez, you Yorkie people are really wimpy! I've played with frogs and toads since I was a little kid (and no I don't have warts!) There aren't any frogs in N. America that are poisonous to my knowledge but some toads, like the Cane Toad, but the majority just cause them to slobber or foam at the mouth a bit. I don't think we have any that are very poisonous here in Oklahoma. Remember frogs are slender and have wet, slimy skin, toad are fat and squatty and have dry warty skin. The most common toad found in North American is the American toad. I guess they can make them sick if they swallow the milky substance they produce, but most dogs don't ever swallow it, they spit it out and produce the foam and saliva, which rids them of the poison. I guess it taste so bad they don't swallow it. My dog Toby got a hold of toad, and he shook his head and slobbered and foamed a bit, but didn't get sick. And he leaves alone now. | Vilette I can just imagine you throwing those gross things over. I bet you have dislocated your shoulder, because out of being scared, and grossed out you probably swung your arm real hard..hahahahahhaha... Sunshine: I am dying here just thinking of a grown man scream. I don't blame him but it's funny as heck. Poor guy probably had nightmares of the toad chasing him.

| Sunshine, that was too, too funny! I guess I really shouldn't laugh, I still get scared when I watch Halloween. That was the scariest movie I've ever seen. He just gets up and keeps coming, just like that toad. LOL Sylvia |

| I've had to have shots for 3 dogs that were playing with toads. They were foaming at the mouth, diarhea, vomiting. Got real dehydrated. One had to have IV's. The vet said they can kill a dog, even a big one. They can let loose something in their skin. I'm with Villette - I throw them, sweep them, get a shovel and toss them over the fence.

It is pretty funny. He's a big guy who doesn't look like he'd scream. I wish I had it on video.
