Gracie bit a frog last night! and yes, part of it is true. While my girl didn't start foaming at the mouth, her salivary glands were working overtime!!!! She was flinging her head around for about 5 minutes and I was worried about her but she is okay. I hope that she learned her lesson and leaves "Fred" alone. I named him Fred...he's been hanging around for a while now. |

That is too funny. What won't they go after. Mine loves crickets. |
so what exactly happens if they bite a frog? anything? |
 Luig used to go crazy over frogs!!!!! But since this one time, he got one, spit it back out and was pawing at his mouth, and licking, and flining his head and shaking!!! he came in and drank like a gallon of water. Ever since then, if he sees one, he whines and runs the other way!!! Its soooo funny. So, in my opinion, I think the froggy or toad--whatever it was- I think it Peed in his mouth- and thats why he is soo freaked out now!! Not sure, but I am glad he doesn't bother with them anymore!!!! So hopefully, she has learned her lesson too!!! hah! Poor baby!!!! |
Wow...We have LOTS of experience with toads in Houston - I called my vet the first time they found one and had the same symptoms - lucky for us there are no poisenous toads here in Houston but I FREAKED out - they leave a very bitter taste and chances are she didn't bite it but tried to ....and let go right away....I HATE those things which accounts for my dislocated shoulder from Playing TOAD TOSS at night - I can hardly keep up with them and throw ALL I see over the fence and lately - I can't throw so good ...so I hate to say this - but I think they're telling their buddies to stay clear of the crazy woman cause a few hit trees and I even hit the fence once. My arm hurts but I have fewer toads though ! |
So Gracie is okay now? Whew! She is rather adventurous, I hope she learns her lesson and can stay away from Fred now! |

Oh, ewww Villette!! |
You should keep a close eye on him. And be very careful around frogs and toads. I was reading a post on here about a month or two ago about how someone's dog bite/ate a toad and the poor thing ended up dying because some types of frogs and toads are poisonous. I can't remember who posted it ot the title, but I remember it quite clearly. I would call the vet just to clarify this. |
You're so lucky all is well w/your baby. Our silk terrier,Tabasco, got ahold of a big frog in our backyard(Tab didnt like other lil critters in our backyard) and was slinging it from side to side in his mouth, and died w/in minutes. It was so sad and broke our daughter heart. DaniBelle |
I went to feed Asia saturday morning and there was a peeper frog in her water dish. I think I confused Asia when I snatched her dish up real quick. She never noticed it but I'm glad I got it out and rinsed out her bowl real good. I like frogs (hince the name redfrog). But I'm not crazy about having a live frog in the house in her water bowl. I guess he liked the cool water. |

EDITED TO ADD - THIS JUST HAPPENED TODAY in my office - First time in THREE YEARS - I saw something I didn't recognize on my floor and absently picked it up - MAN ! It was a FREAKIN DEAD TOAD ! I picked it up ! I SCREAMED & THREW it - I never scream over anything ! my hands are still shaking - you don't KNOW HOW GROSS A DEAD TOAD FEELS in your hand till you've held one ! Then I had to go find that disgusting creature and get rid of it. WHERE is THE MAN when you need one ! Cheri did it. She is the Total Toad hunting maniac now - each of my girls went thru this phase but they've never actually caught one - let alone bring it to my office and leave one at my feet ! I reallllllllly want to barf. Both girls freaked out when I screamed and were trying to kiss me - eeewwwwwwwwwwwwww.....No WAY was Cheri kissing me.......She's got TOAD BREATH - they're having a BATH FOR REAL now - It gets worse - she just threw up too...shoot - now I've got to watch her very carefully - lucky she didn't eat it ! Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww ! |
I just read in the paper an article about Bufo Toads. They are starting to over run s. Florida because they have no natural enemies. They have these glands that squints out a toxin when a dog or cat puts it in thier month. This toxin is poisinous and can kill a dog under 40 lbs. The article says they are starting to slowly move up state. I live in N. Florida, but now I'm going to start watching out for these toads. |
In Arizona we have Colorado River toads. They can be very dangerous to dogs. I have a friend who has a large dog that almost died just last week. She spent $1,000. at the vet, but her dog is o.k. now. The worst thing is the vet said the dog may go right back and play with the toad again. :( |
