Smile New here :-)

Hi Im new here but been lurking for a little while. My name is Beth and I live in Indiana. My hubby and I decided to get our new baby (yorkie) sometime in late February or March, or as close to the end of winter as possible. We currently have a male Golden Retriever that is the biggest baby Ive ever had as a dog. Other than shedding I couldnt ask for a better dog. He is a little over 2 years old and is so calm. We also have 3 human babies ages 2 (soon will be 3), 4, and 6.
Ive been reading up on all of your advice on a lot of things and I am so glad I found this site. You have made my mind up on so many things and educated me on so much I didnt know. I do know I will be crate training just like I did with my Golden for sure. So I have a few questions and some things I need advice on...

1. My golden retriever is a male and is not neutered but will be before we bring the yorkie into the house. Do you think there will be any big issues if we get a male yorkie and neuter him also as soon as he can be? (they will never be left unsupervised due to my goldens size)

2. My Golden currently eats Canidae All Life Stages. Will a Yorkie puppy be able to eat that at first? or should I get some kind of small puppy kibble like Wellness or something?

3. What age is best to bring a Yorkie home in your opinion? 6, 8, 10, 12 weeks?

4. I hear about having to have Yorkies teeth pulled. Is that every Yorkie? is there any other medical issues that have to be dealt with that are common like that?

5. What is your most favorite thing about your Yorkie baby or babies?

Im sure I will have more questions but thats all that is on my mind at the time. Any advice you have for me will be greatly appreciated I look forward to talking with all of you more

Beth

Welcome to Yorkie Talk! I want to commend you for doing your homework first, before getting your Yorkie. It will surely better prepare you for a becoming a new Yorkie mom.

I understand you have many questions, and I might suggest that you post them one or two at a time; you'll probably get more specific responses that way.

Age: 12 weeks should be the minimum age to bring home. Considering you have young children and a big dog, the older the pup is the better. They are incredibly small and easily injured, and will need your CONSTANT supervision to be kept safe. It is a huge responsibility you are taking on, and any accident can be devistating as well as very costly.

Food: Yorkies eat so little, find the best quality puppy food.

Teeth: Some retain baby teeth, some do not. You should know around 6 months, and can have retained teeth removed at the same time as neutering if necessary.

Favorite thing about Yorkies: Well, that would take all day to answer, so snoop around this site a bit and you'll get the picture.

Good luck, and keep doing research to make sure this is the right breed choice for you and your family.

Hi, Beth, welcome to YT. I agree, that considering your childrens ages that you should get a puppy that is at least 12 weeks and I recommend looking for a puppy that will not be too tiny. One that would be around 6 or 7 lbs would be ideal.

Canidae is a wonderful dog food. I have fed it to my yorkies for years. It is great for puppies too.

There is no way anyone can guarantee how your Golden and a yorkie will get along but most likely if they are both neutered they should do well.

My favorite thing about yorkies is that they are so loving and devoted to me.

Hello and welcome! I'm a relatively new Yorkie Momma, so I can't answer all your questions. But I can say that I think you will LOVE having a Yorkie!

1. My golden retriever is a male and is not neutered but will be before we bring the yorkie into the house. Do you think there will be any big issues if we get a male yorkie and neuter him also as soon as he can be? (they will never be left unsupervised due to my goldens size)

**I really don't know about this, but I wouldn't think it would be a problem. I would look into Cesar Millan (The Dog Whisperer) about suggestions for introducing a new dog, and dominance issues.

2. My Golden currently eats Canidae All Life Stages. Will a Yorkie puppy be able to eat that at first? or should I get some kind of small puppy kibble like Wellness or something?

**I don't use this food, but I would suggest that you ask your vet the next time you are there and see what (s)he says.

3. What age is best to bring a Yorkie home in your opinion? 6, 8, 10, 12 weeks?

**As hard as it may be to wait, my vote would be 12 weeks. They should be well socialized and more psychologically ready to leave their mommas. Being a little bigger, you won't have as many potential problems with hypoglycemia and in relating to a big dog and small children.

4. I hear about having to have Yorkies teeth pulled. Is that every Yorkie? is there any other medical issues that have to be dealt with that are common like that?

**I'm sure not every Yorkie's teeth need to be pulled, but I know it is fairly common. When Lexi was spayed, they pulled a few of her baby teeth that hadn't come out. Unfortunately, she didn't have all of her adult teeth in yet, so we now have some "double" teeth. One advantage to getting a male is that time is not as critical for neutering. In females, some feel it is best to do it before their first heat. So, you may have the leeway to wait until all of your pup's baby teeth are out. That way, if any need to be pulled, you can do it with the neutering.

5. What is your most favorite thing about your Yorkie baby or babies?

**That is so hard to answer! Lexi is absolutely adorable, she's so loving, and she brings great joy to our family. There's so much more, but I couldn't write it all!

Im sure I will have more questions but thats all that is on my mind at the time. Any advice you have for me will be greatly appreciated I look forward to talking with all of you more

**Ask away! I think it's great that you are learning so much ahead of time. I wish I had known of YT this much in advance of getting Lexi. You will be well-prepared.

Welcome to YT, and I'd definetly neuter him as soon as possible, because it takes a while for their hormones to adjust.

They are great little dogs that love to sleep with you....With your little ones you may need to supervise them when they are holding the pup. Make sure they are sitting on the floor or a cushion because these guys can die if they are dropped. They are more fragile than most breeds. Good Luck to you......And welcome to YT

Thank you for all the replies and advice I will definately supervise the kids with the puppy. My girls (4&6 year old) has been watching youtube videos of yorkie puppies for the past few weeks. I wanted them to see just how small the pups are and how a little dog acts alot different than a big dog. I told them not to hold the puppy unless me or my hubby is around, never to feed it anything, and so on. Ive been doing everything I can think of to prepare them. My youngest Im sure will take an interest in the puppy but he doesnt pay too much attention to our golden unless the golden comes to him first.

And these little pups love to get under your feet, so it's easy for kids to trip and fall on them. Even stepping on a foot can cause injury that can cost thousands to repair. They are as easy to pick up as a toy, so it is tempting to kids, but the puppies can wiggle out of their hands and fall. They are also very playful, so get more interest than some bigger or older dogs. Teach kids never to put something around the pups neck, no ropes or collars, as tracheas are fragile and can easily collapse. Puppies can choke on small toys, so watch for that too.

Gee, I don't mean to point out all the dangers. You are so smart to look into this thoroughly first, to be aware. On the upside---Yorkies are so amazingly cute, cuddly, loyal, brave, and will steal your heart in a second. My daughter says they aren't "dogs" they are children with fur; she's right.

Just gotta protect them.

It sounds like you've put some good thought into this before bringing your little guy home

I think it's wise that you neuter your Golden prior to bringing in a smaller dog there will likely be less challenges
But as with any intro with a new dog
supervision is a must and do it on their terms
not yours

Best to keep your puppy with a special puppy formula
you want to least number of possible problems starting out
and changing a puppy's food is one place that can cause stomach problems
ask the breeder what food they are using and also ask your Vet what they recommend

Generally, 8 - 12 weeks
anything sooner will cause stress for your little one

Teeth pulled?
Good God no .... unless there is a specific reason

Hehe ... and favorite thing?
I don't know ... just them being "Yorkie" I guess
They are a pleasure from start to finish everyday
