Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Pet Sitting - How do you do it? Ok I am leaving on a trip soon for 10 days...and they airline and hotel do not allow pets. I have no one but my cousin to take care of Georgia and I just feel like she is not like another dog...she needs alot of attention...so I tried looking for someone to watch her or a pet resort and i just feel afraid to leave her there too....I have no idea what i am going to do.... How did you find your pet sitter? How did your dog react to being left with strangers? |

| Dog sitters Hi, when I need to go out of town, etc. I leave my yorkie with my parents. He's been to their house before, and he gets along great with their dog. Which is much, much larger. If you need to leave it with someone, I recommend leaving it w/someone you know and trust. |

Maybe you could google pet resorts nearby? We having never boarded Franklin but if we ever needed to, we would use his daycare. They sleep in kennels at night but during the day they get to play as if they were there for daycare. That way the dog would get interaction with other dogs throughout the day and not be so lonely.. Orrrrrrr this is a little far fetched but some members have had other YT members dog sit for them. Maybe there is someone in your area who is willing, although you may not trust people you meet over the internet. I would be weary also but it has happened successfully before! MOST of the members here are genuine and kind-hearted.

| Pasquale has always traveled with me everywhere...since he is so portable. HOwever, at one time I had a Siberian Husky who I had to find pet care for. The thought of boarding him just made me feel sad...so what i did was.....i called to see how much it was to board him. Then I offered that same amount of money to my 18 yr old neighbor ..the catch was..she had to live at my house for the week(I think dogs do better in their own environment) and take care of my dog. I've known this girl since she was a baby and she was very good with my dog. i left her 2 pages of notes about my dog...my cell phone number just in case she had ANY questions...and i would call her randomly to make sure my dog was ok. When i got back from vacation it was good to know that my dog was well cared for .

| I know this is a difficult situation...I just went away for a few days in the beginning of December, and that was rough. With my shih tzu, I used to board her at the vets' office. That wasn't really an issue, as by that time, she was very old, blind, deaf, etc. She basically ate, pottied, and slept. So having her in a cage for most of the day really wasn't a big deal - she would just sleep in her bed all day. The walking/attention she would get were plenty - for her. That would not be the ideal situation for Lexi, though - a young, healthy puppy - or any other active, alert dog. I asked around, and talked about it a lot. One friend actually offered to watch Lexi for me. I wasn't sure about it. I certainly trust her, but she does have a dog (an older Lhasa), and a daughter - although she's in high school already. I just don't know if people realize how careful you have to be with such a small dog! But she did offer to have me bring Lexi over to make sure the two dogs got along. I tucked that away if needed. Another friend said she would have watched her, and would watch her another time, but she just couldn't do it for that weekend. I did go to the doggie "bed & breakfast" that she uses, and loves, though. But I wasn't happy with that. For what it was, it seemed clean, but like an older clean. All the little dogs were in crates stacked 3 high. They would get about an hour a day, outside, in a small cement-floored run surrounded by chain link fence. For an extra $25, you could have your dog played with in an enclosed playground area - one-on-one. That would be for 1/2 hour one day and 1/2 hour the next day. I just couldn't bear to leave her in a crate for that long! I'm sure the dogs are well-taken care of, but I want more for Lexi. I was very fortunate that my brother agreed to stay at my house and watch Lexi for me. That worked out for both of us, but it would not be the solution every time. Look into pet sitters. Some will come to visit your house maybe twice a day to walk, feed, and play with your pet. Ask around for recommendations. Ask a neighbor or friend/relative who lives nearby if they would be interested in doing this. I would be hesitant about letting a stranger into my home, but I know that there are many people who do that, and it works out fine for them. I feel I just got very lucky, though... I went to a new groomer because I didn't care for the one who did Lexi's first grooming. She grooms small dogs, specializing in Yorkies. She raises Yorkies and breeds Yorkies and shows Yorkies. She also boards dogs at her house. While I was there (she grooms out of her house), she had one smaller dog - not sure what type, and a Yorkie. One had run of the kitchen; the other was gated in the den. While I was there, another Yorkie was dropped off. She was loose in the part of the house where we were - the dining room/living room area. The house was clean - it did not smell like dogs! They are obviously well-taken care of and loved. Some of the dogs who stay there sleep in the beds with the family members. I love that they are in a house setting, played with, and given lots of attention and affection from people who love Yorkies! Both my daughter and I felt that if we ever needed someone to watch Lexi, we would feel comfortable using her. (Oh, and in speaking to her, I found out she is a YT member too!) So, talk to as many people as you can...you never know what you will find! Good luck. |

| We have been on both sides of this. We have just sent some yorkies home with their mom today after yorkiesitting for four days. This is the second year in a row we've done this. She asked in the regional section of YT if anyone would be interested. We replied that would would because we love yorkies and wanted to continue Gizmo's socialization. She and her pups came to dinner one evening about a month before to meet us and let the pups play. We all got to know each other and that worked great! Then, when my husband had to have major surgery out of town, a different YT family volunteered to keep Gizmo for us. In that situation, we didn't have time to let everyone meet first, so I asked for and checked references. They were wonderful people!! I couldn't have found a better situation for Gizmo. Do you go to yorkie meetups? Are there people you know who have yorkies in your area? Maybe you could also ask them to get the word out that you're looking. Good luck. I know how tough it is.

| We seldom go out of town, but when we do, we pay the breeder's 12 year old daughter to take care of Hope and Rio. Of course, the breeder and the rest of the family sit them also! They also get to visit their fur-families, and have a ball! |

| I know & totally understand your apprehension, which is why I've only been on one real vacation since we got Deegan 3.5 yrs ago. I will not board him at a kennel & I honestly don't trust too many people with him either... The one person I do trust is my hubby's mom, but I'm kinda on bad terms with her right now so that kinda leaves her out. The only other two (of which I'm still nervous with) are my co-worker & friend or our neighbour's daughter. They are both big animal lovers, but still... And I prefer them to watch Deegan at our house. Just because I don't want to upset his routine too much. With the mother-in-law, he's used of her house so that's not a problem. If I had two it might be easier to bring to a kennel, because they'd have each other, but I still don't know if I'd do that. I know a couple people in my area that are on YT, and leaving Deegan with them would be a bit easier because I know that they love & cherish their pets like I do Deegan, and they know what to expect. It's a tough decision though...

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | While family or friends that the pups know is best, I have had to try other options. One trip we traveled by car and found a hotel that accepted pets but needed a place to stay for the long days while we were away from the hotel.....so we checked out a couple of local "day care" options in that area and found one that worked well for us. (It turned out the groomer bred/raised yorkies....so our girls got some extra attention.) Prior to leaving our pups, we had family visit the facility several times on different days at different times. My last trip was by air and I could not travel all the dogs. (I have 4 dogs and it was only 3 of us traveling....not to mention the airline only allowed 2 dogs per flight.....and I did not want to ship any of them in cargo.) So I had to go looking at other options....while I thought about the vet and the groomer....neither gave the dogs enough out of crate time for my comfort....but we had a brand new Petsmart Hotel that opened in the area....we did several visits (different days/times) and took several tours of the facility....and made this choice. It was expensive - as we opted for doggy day care every other day and two play times the other days - and we opted for a suite - which gave them a more quiet environment and bigger area. Both of the times above.....when we picked up the pups they were happy to see us, but not stressed. We saw no negative after effects of either of these stays and would go back to either one if the need arises again. Good luck in your search!
