While family or friends that the pups know is best, I have had to try other options.

One trip we traveled by car and found a hotel that accepted pets but needed a place to stay for the long days while we were away from the hotel.....so we checked out a couple of local "day care" options in that area and found one that worked well for us. (It turned out the groomer bred/raised yorkies....so our girls got some extra attention.) Prior to leaving our pups, we had family visit the facility several times on different days at different times.

My last trip was by air and I could not travel all the dogs. (I have 4 dogs and it was only 3 of us traveling....not to mention the airline only allowed 2 dogs per flight.....and I did not want to ship any of them in cargo.) So I had to go looking at other options....while I thought about the vet and the groomer....neither gave the dogs enough out of crate time for my comfort....but we had a brand new Petsmart Hotel that opened in the area....we did several visits (different days/times) and took several tours of the facility....and made this choice. It was expensive - as we opted for doggy day care every other day and two play times the other days - and we opted for a suite - which gave them a more quiet environment and bigger area.

Both of the times above.....when we picked up the pups they were happy to see us, but not stressed. We saw no negative after effects of either of these stays and would go back to either one if the need arises again.

Good luck in your search!
