| YT 2000 Club Member | welcome to YT and I wish you the best with your new pup, he sounds like a beauty!! wanted to add: I understand that yorkies are expensive however you can get the happiest healthiest dog in the world for a cheaper price, so honestly telling the OP that her pup will probably have health issues because she is getting for 800 bucks is just wrong. I got my registered 4 pound very healthy toy poodle puppy for only 400 dollars and she had all her shots. I also got my yorkipoo at one day shy of 7 weeks and he has been fine, no aggression issues, has been super easy to house train and doesnt have any attachment issues. If the pup is going to be super small then I recommend to keep it with its mother longer just so it can get more nurishment from the mom. Some people on this board are very nice and offer great information, however some of them are pretty strong when it comes to offering thier opioins on certian topics and this just happens to one of them. Good luck!!

Bottom line in my opinion is that no matter what you pay for a yorkie, you had better do your homework and be prepared to spend money for grooming and vetting. Some are healthier than others....and some have other issues...you just always have to have a plan. Just buying a cheap dog and being able to afford dog food is not enough! I definitely am a person with very strong opinions on this topic because I have seen the results of people not being able to provide proper care for their yorkies over and over and over again! I do my level best to let people know what can happen!

| There is a DNA test that you can test your puppy to see if it's a purebred. |

An extra week or two with his parents won't hurt though, I know you are eager to get him home and start loving him and I'm sure being an only pup and a c-section that he is gonna be a big boy but I'm sure it must be cold there in January and alittle extra weight may be a good thing

| OHHH BOY.. lot of red flags in this ONE statement. She bought the dog in quebec. Quebec is the puppymill capital of canada. And she bought the dog at 6 weeks and brought it home. The dog ha sno papers and she doesnt stay in touch withthe breeder and it would be hard for her to get papers?? Okay first off. Sounds like the mom was ourchased from a mill. Secondly, if she got her female from a good breeder, even though the dog was bought in quesbec, she should be able to get papers NO PROBLEM! We purchased our registered, purebred samoyed husky in ontario, and we managed to get papers and sign contracts etc etc. It is a very easy task to do even if you do live 4000 kms away! |

| It sounds like the deal has been made and it is too late to turn back. There are some things that you may need to prepare for. Some Yorkies do very well leaving at 6 weeks and some do not. They can easily go into hypoglycemia. If that happens, somebody may have to force feed the puppy every 1-3 hours even at night. It is never recommended that a Yorkie leave mom this early by reputable breeders (in the US, that would be those breeders who follow YTCA standards, and if they don't, they need to have a good reason not to). If the parents didn't have health screenings done, the pup is at more of a risk for luxating patella (at least $1000 per knee if it requires surgery), liver shunt (one of the cheapest places in the US is over $1000 and then you have diagnostics before that), Legg Calve Perthes, etc. You can do the Wisdom Panel to determine if this pup is full Yorkie but it isn't 100% accurate and after you get the pup, it may not be worth it. All dogs, except for rescues, should have a health guarantee. It is something the breeders writes, not the new owner. It should be the breeder's idea to stand behind their puppies. $800 is a lot of money to spend on a dog whose parents haven't been health screened, that is only 6 weeks old and when there is a questionable pedigree situation. Some breeders will ship their dogs, so they don't have to live within driving distance. Just another option.

| YT 1000 Club Member | Good luck with your new puppy. It sounds like he will be so spoiled with love which is what ANY puppy deserves. I would go through the house and puppy proof as much as you can. Look out for any cords or small objects that can be chewed on. Make sure he has his own place with lots of toys and fresh food and water at all times (this helps avoid low blood sugar). When they're really tiny they need to just be able to graze or at least mine always did better nibbeling here and there. Make sure you know what food he's on now and keep him on that, if you want to switch do it gradually so you don't mess up his little system. Read up on the types of food that are the best for him. Have fun they don't stay babies long (well I still think Roxie is a baby even though she's turning 2 in March)! |
