| New to this breed! Hi there! I'm new to the forum, but I'm very glad I found this "community" of Yorkie experts! I'm getting a new puppy in ten days and although she is not a purebred Yorkie (she is a Yorkie poo), I hope that I can still get some help and advice. A year ago I was a mum to a black lab girl, but unfortunately she wasn't able to stay too long with me once she got very sick. Point is, Im not too new to the "puppy thing", but when it comes to this breed (or part breed) I have a ton of worries and questions! First and foremost, Im really worried about house breaking my pup! I've read/heard that Yorkies (especially girls) are pretty stubborn to house train. I know people who have adult Yorkies and still are not 100% house trained. I'm wondering if this is true, and maybe not as true since I have a Yorkie/Poodle cross breed?? I'm very worried because I will only be home with her for two weeks 24/7, before I go back to my regular schedule- where she will have to be left alone for at least five hours. I'd really prefer to have her crate train- this worked very well with my lab and a plus is that we already have a huge crate. But I've heard a lot of advice such as its bad to use too big of a crate. I've even heard of people litter training their pups- is this true and a good method? I'd love to hear what people recommended! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome and congratulations. I have had ones that are easier to train than others, but the key is being consistant and watching them like a hawk when they are not confined. I have 2 that are trained to go on pads and my pom goes outside only, my one that I got as an adult and not trained didn't take to pad training and goes outside but she does have accidents, but I am to blame for not watching her closely. I crate trained them at first, but once they were housebroken, they were given run of the back bedrooms. One thing since you are going to be leaving her part of the day, I would make sure when you first get her to come and go so she gets use to you not always being there. Enjoy!!

| I've had many different breeds of dogs over the years and yorkies were definately the hardest to train. I had a poodle (min) once and she was the easiest to train. It took me only one weekend. I think crate training is a great idea but you don't want to use a crate that was large enough for a lab. A crate should only be large enough for the dog to stand up and turn around in. You must remember though that a puppy can't "hold it" if you are going to be gone working for 8 hours and it would be cruel to expect it to hold it for that long in the beginning. Good luck and I hope the poodle in your pup shines through in the house breaking |
